Thanks for the advice lemonjelly. This is what I've been wondering. I need to investigate values, which will likely be a long job. Viva's pointed out a website to me. Do you have any other suggestions?
I'd suggest a list of all the records, including the label. If possible, work out if they are "originals". A lot of albums would have further releases, kinda like reprints of books. Originals have always (usually) been more valuable. Normally because there are less of them, and also, cosmetic changes may have been made to the sleeve, cover or similar.
You may need to grade the condition of the record & sleeve (mint, near mint, very good, good & so on).
You may well find guidance on prices by looking at record collector magazine. Ebay isn't the greatest place to get an idea of a records value, because people can get quite caught up in the auction process.
One of the best suggestions is visit 2nd hand record stores in your local area. Normally staff in them will be quite knowledgeable & willing to chat. They will share stuff like how much places are buying for, as well as what individuals are willing to pay.:)
When you've done your list, talk to friends you know who are fans of that band/person. They may well know of certain rare records having value.
I have records I have paid a lot for.:o Over the odds in some cases...:o But I wanted them, & am now happy to own them. I have records I have seen sell for well over £100, & there is no chance I'd sell at that price, even if it is worth less. & it is worth bearing that in mind. Collectors, especially ones looking for the missing piece of the jigsaw, will pay over the odds. I remember being after 1 particular 12" single for a band to complete a collection. I'd have happily paid up to £50 (basically for 1 track out of 4 on it which I'd never heard). Luckily, I picked up a copy in good nick for £4!:)
If I can help further, post or pm me.It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
I have inherited a loft full of records (a bit of hyperbole there)
Some are vinyl (Pye golden guinea anyone?) but most of them are shellac (or what ever 78's were made of) - I made a start in cataloguing them on spread sheets but ran out of enthusiasm.
Anywhere you can recommend for finding out if any have a greater value than making vases/flower pots?0 -

As 78's, I'd feel there is a likelihood that some may be of value, if not a majority.
The only difficulty has been finding a machine to play them on.:o
That said, affectionado's will have the technology.

It could work... I know some people think beetroot is good with chocolate... personally, though, I prefer chocolate with my chocolate, none of those healthy options are as good.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I have acquired a few of those, Johnny Mercer, Bing Crosby and Al Jolson. Who sings on yours?'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is.
