and you could have checked out the Brother Mark 2 industrial sewing machine I am trying freecycle,.....but it didn't seem to post.
Snag is, it's my back up machine..works fine but a bit noisy and I haven't used it for 3 years...so sat in the garage. A bit of surface rust on bobbin winder but it's solid. Made in Japan, they last forever.
*wishing I lived near enough to Brighton to be on the Freecycle list*
I have an old Singer manual treadle machine now, but I learned to sew on a Brother industrial - I would quite possibly kill to own one0 -
Well back from the boot sale...not sure whether that was worth it or not! After taking out pitch fees, I made the grand total of £14.75.
It's usually a popular boot sale but there just wasn't the people this time around, in fact there were less people actually doing the boot sale.
So for that £14.75, I now have a completely beggered back, I got up early, the kids are tired.....grrrrrr.
There is a thread on here.
In my opinion, you should do better on Ebay if you have the time to do the research and can get round high delivery costs.
Though it is funny, you take the same "valuable family heirlooms" to about a dozen boot sales and suddenly something sells (and the buyer is really pleased to get it).
At a boot sale you might be up against people like me - just wanting to avoid paying someone 1,000 GBP to clear the junk; while making enough (say 50 GBP clear) for "a day out"- decent pub lunch and a bit of "petrol money"; with the added benefit of knowing you have contributed a bit less to land-fill.

The flowers are the usual cordial, fizz or wine
The elderberries you can make wine or port and mix into jams. I make a hedgerow jam with either windfall/crab apples and blackberries and elderberries.
I have been reading these last few posts with wonder and awe, and no I'm not taking the mick, wow....where do you learn to do all this? I am genuinely amazed!|

My mother is the age that she could have been my grandmother, and my sister could have been my mother, both were well into the domesticated satge when I was born, doing what my mothers mother/grandmother had taught her, and learning things then....both of them cooked very well and preserve well. My sister makes better marmalade than anyone (although I'd never admit to her that her's is better than mine). My fruit cheese's are the best though.. I forage because I was taught to, and because its fun. DH's favourite thing of all is wild garlic.
Making jams/jellies is incredibly relaxing. And more cheerful than baked beans to lay down against disaster
There are books about foraging.
I don't make any alcohol...yet. I'm just not keen n the results usually. I freeze juice from our apples, that I haven't turned into jellies. I quite like perry though.:o DH likes cider though, he's thinking of having a go...0 -
That sounds logical LIR, having that knowledge and intuition passed down to you. I like foraging at boot fairs, flea markets and er, ebay. Used to buy and sell quite a bit, may get back into it now I think. I know thats probably not what you meant by foraging, but art, antique furniture, books and classic cars are my thing so I suppose each to his or her own.
A bit of light gardening though, I am becoming quite interested, maybe its my age! ....(shakes head and smiles...)"If you are going through Hell, keep going" - Winston Churchill0 -

Unfortunately, my very reliable, solid Brother (who has earnt me a mint over the past decade) didn't go to someone who knew how to sew and had no interest in sewing at all....it went to dealer...and the other 2 who wanted it and no-showed...and faffed about as I offered first were also traders. I had about 15 enqs in all.
My experience of Freecycle was quite negative and I will never do it again.0 -

LIR eats flowers you know...:)...her forraging skills (assuming no acid rain/ nuclear dust) would probably enable her to survive longer than the baked bean brigade too.0 -

Foraging is foraging. Same skill, just need to set different search objectives. Salads are an easy way to start. keep it easy at first....a few dandilion/pis en lit leaves, a handful of nasturtiums or rose petals, then progress...lavender cupcakes are popular, and lavender is yum with lamb and rosemary. It doesn't have to be hard core grow/find everything you eat, but a bit of something on a saturday is quite fun.0
