Lir - I have had the questions starting about what I want for my birthday next month, especially as it is the big 40 and I haven't a scoobie what I want. I don't covet handbags or shoes, I love books but don't like the idea of people wasting money on full price ones and they don't tend not to have the time to put the research in to get them cheaply...I'm just not materially minded.
So any suggestions (but they have to be budget minded as my parents are not big spenders), would be very much appreciated.
Amazon'd books. The ones you want at not full price?
I feel quite materially minded. Its not I like things because the are expensive, just lots that I like is. I find unwanted gifts hard to deal with: because they are treasured as gifts and then there is the issue of what to do with an object you don't really like....0 -
Buddhism is about the only religion that follows any degree of logic. The rest all fall back on the faith argument when the reasoning gets silly.
I like the idea of working for redemption. If I was sitting on the right hand of God, I'd be pushing that idea
The nature religions the worship of sun the ritualistic feeding of food and cidre crops.., the knees up when sun is furthest away to keep the spirits up seem perfectly logical to me as logical at least as Buddhism.0 -
Umm, nothing sounds more like a piano than an actual piano.
It might be worth sending a letter into your local paper. Loads of little auld ladies desperate to offload their pianos free to a good home.
Trust me, I have Aunties:cool:
I'm a piano girl to ws but hey have ongoing costs like tuning.
I hate playing a keyboard with a passion but my seriously professional pianists friends just snigger at me and use keyboards for everything from composing to gigging and recording. I've always noted they play the piano when at our places despite having brought keyboards though0 -

Lol, I read my quoted post and realised that I had been using a double negative...I must have been tired last night to do that.
School report - I must do better.:D
I use Amazon all the time for the second hand books but my family are not so inclined and that is where my problem lies. I can spend ages going over the different authors available, comparing prices between there and Ebay to get the best deal plus also at the same time, discovering new authors I may like to try. My parents on the other hand, just want to go in, buy and come out, it is about the only time we disagree on money spending...I research prices to get the cheapest deal, they want the easy life.
They have in the past just given me the money so I can buy the books but that really doesn't sit well with them, they like to hand over a present rather than money as they know if it is a tight week/month, I will buy food/pay a bill over buying myself a book or two and they want me to treat myself.
I am exactly the same with gifts which do not serve a purpose for me...I would much prefer someone to get something second hand, maybe cheap and tatty that I like than spend a lot of money on something I don't. My dalliance last year got me a handbag for my birthday as he said that all woman like handbags (the grrrr from me was well hidden :rotfl:) despite my already saying that I don't covet handbags and certainly not expensive ones, plus I already had a very nice handbag which had been sent to me. It felt really ungrateful but I really cannot see the point in having more of one item if the first item is still in good use.
I expect I am awkward to buy for, one of those very annoying people who you never really know what to give. I do have my wants but I would never put them on the list as they are just much too expensive to expect people to buy them for me (newer car, bigger television for my room, a laptop etc), apart from that, I like my books, they are my escape and I can keep my hobby going by also selling them on to get different ones.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

Sue, you may find the "Dexter" books interesting.
I got into them from the tv series with Michael C Hall. The series was great (I waiting for series 3).
To date I only have 1 book, but plan to get others. I have gone through most of another one in the library though. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

You're welcome!
I won't spoil it for you, but the whole concept & all is very enjoyable!:)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Ooohh, just remembered something, not sure if I had said it before but I am so proud, I will say it again anyway.
Had parents night for my eldest last week and his English teacher has told me I have a very talented young writer on my hands. Eldest writes in a very dark almost Jeffrey Deaver ish style and for his original creative writing GCSE course work got an A (22/25), not happy with this, he has made a few changes and is now getting an A*!
And this from the child who 18 months ago was predicted an E in English at best.We made it! Me tooIn the past I have tried to encourage people to 'club together' to get one useful thing, rather than piles of unwanted things which I will never use - but it never seems to work. In the end I gave up and now, when they ask, I always request chocolate or wine - that way I always get something I can use....;)
If you like books, maybe create a wish list on amazon, and direct your relatives to that????SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)0 -
Sue just thought of another!
One of my favourite books of all time, & in addition a classic - In cold blood by truman capote.
based on true events, & created a style of writing labelled "faction".
I still love this book, having studied it for A level english.
