Perhaps the original post should be changed (and title if possible) so as to prevent mini-worries from the likes of us who have Flex Accounts and it takes a minute or two to realise it doesn't affect us at all?

I got the letter yesterday and went into my local branch to ask what to do as I keep my Flexaccount Cash Card to withdraw cash abroad. The girl told me that this was costing Nationwide too much money and that they were happy for me to close my account even though I had a saving account with them. So it is definitely true that you will not be able to use a Nationwide Card to withdraw cash abroad when they issue the new card, according to my local branch. I said I was going to have to get a Santander Zero Card and she just shrugged her shoulders.

I'd double check first, branch staff are renowned for giving out duff information.

I receive the same letter from Nationwide this morning.
I have a nationwide Flex account with purple "cash card" (not visa debit).
The card can be used in cashpoints in UK and abroad but does not function as a debit card.
The main reasons I have this account are to have access to esavings (plus) and to withdraw cash for free or cheaply overseas.

It looks like the latter function will disappear with the new card:

The letter states "We will be issuing a new cash card + to replace your current card."
Cards will be sent out between June 2010 and September 2010. Until then you can continue using your old card as normal.
The new cash card + will include "the ability to pay for things in shops, online and by phone." and "You can use your cash card + at shops in the UK and overseas but please note that your new card cannot be used to withdraw cash overseas."

I think I will be applying for a visa debit card for this account instead.

    OK. Im a little confused...
(Hi everyone btw, first time poster :o)

I opened an account with Nationwide last week, for the sole purpose of using it abroad this summer (Spending 3+ months abroad). What I received was a purple cash card, set to expire 03/12 and a welcome letter saying here's your new FlexAccount card... This is where I get confused, as people are saying it affects the cash card, but not the FlexAccount :S

In addition, Nationwide says the new cards will be issued between June 2010 and September 2010 - The 3 months that I'm away. Surely they can't just deactivate my card whilst I'm abroad, it says it doesn't expire until 2012.

Hi and welcome to the forums,

Reading this page on Nationwide's website may clear up some confusion.

    e.g.
I'm currently travelling abroad and will be away until after September 2010 – what do I need to do?
If you don't plan to come back to the UK during the dates the cards are being sent out, please contact us on +44 845 604 6345. Your new card will be sent to your home address. This may prevent you from accessing the cash machine with your existing cash card. If this is the case we can discuss alternative arrangements with you for the time you're abroad.
  • I have the Nationwide Cash Card - (Cirrus). I too like many others on the advice on MSE at the time opened the account due to the no fee for cash withdrawals abroad.

I just rang Nationwide in regard to the changes and their Call Centre advised me that all Cash Card holders will be receiving an 'upgraded' 'Cash card +' account that can NOT be used to withdraw cash from ATM's abroad.

For those who still wish to maintain an account with Nationwide and withdraw cash from ATM's abroad may be 'upgraded' to a Visa Debit card, and still be charged a fee or loading to use it abroad.

They weren't specific on dates, only between June and September 2010. They said the original Cash Card (Cirrus) will work for 21 days after the issue of the new Cash Card +.

Seems like the days of 'fee free' cash withdrawals abroad are numbered :-(

Can't seem to find any equivalent deals (and I have read the other posts re Santander and Post Office). I guess we'll just have to wear it :-(

Pity those who are already abroad and rely on it, and hope they aren't abroad when the original card stops working.

The only fee that applies to the VISA Debit Card is a 1% VISA fee outside the VISA Europe sphere of operations, no fee or loading otherwise.

Yes, as you say, the days of fee-free cash withdrawals are waining. However, if you opt for the Santander Zero card and use it for absolutely everything, you will probably not need much cash and you can take that with you from the UK. This is what I usually do and use the credit card for every single purchase possible - even low value bar bills - some establishments have a lower limit under which they do not accept credit cards (same as quite a lot of places in the UK). The last time I went away, I used the Santander Zero card constantly and had a two page bill after I got back but most of the line items were no more than €20 - €30.
