I for one am very jelous!
I would rear anything to have my own lovely tasting meat, unfortunately not allowed where we live and not enough space.
My parents kept lots of animals for us to eat, chickens from chicks, ducks, turkey, geese, rabbits & one day my dad brought a tiny pig. I was about 10 ish and used to feed him and take him around on the lead in the garden. I used to kiss his little snout, ohh yes, I loved him.

One day our piggy walked out for the last time before it ended up on my plate. I was very sad as he was my friend, but quickly forgot when it was on my plate. Fantastic memory left for me.

You daughter will thank you once she`s older, and treasure her memories.:o

You got an abusive post, not from me, but I feel someone needs to say your post is very insensitive for a PETS FORUM! You even showed a picture of him...... the mind boggles. There are links to a Bunny forum in the bunny threads on here, I'll go on one and ask about the best way to butcher 'fluffy' for dinner..... hope I don't get an abusive post.

Its a pet forum yes but not for only vegetarian pet owners! I dont think many are offended :)

Juliepink, try the old style board, you may get a knowledgable response there too - I seem to remember Penelope Penguin is raising a pig for meat - and she has a lovely pic of it! Please dont stop posting here though, I for one am loving this thread and am looking forward to the further adventures of Lamby :D And as with any topic, if anyone finds it offensive or upsetting they dont have to read it!
  • Me too - keep posting! I would love to rear my own meat

Does she have it in the house with the family though? I think if you treat it as a pet, it really can become very difficult when it comes to slaughtering the animal - my granddad used to keep pigs for meat (outside obviously!) - he could never be there when the slaughterman came - just knowing what had happened to them used to bother him enough. The more you all become fond of it, and the more it comes to trust you, the harder that will be.

Lol, good point! I dont think she blow dries it or takes it for walks on a lead either :)

To be fair though, Juliepink seems to have a very pragmatic attitude towards it all - I am looking forward to see how it "pans" out! (Sorry about the pun, hope I dont get a "roast"ing for it :P)

I meant advice on the keeping livestock laws/slaughtering and butchering side of things rather than the pet aspect :)

I have no problem at all with growing your own veg and rearing your own meat.

    But...

This sounds (to me) like someone bored with too much time and money.

Feed it give it a "normal" life, then eat it.

Or keep it as a pet till you get bored again.
