Problems with IE on my laptop - virus??

Hi

I wonder if anybody can help. I'm not very technological at all, but the last couple of day my IE has been playing up a bit. My laptop still has Windows XP on it and the IE keeps 'not responding', not opening new tabs, can't view favourites etc, etc.

My McAfee ran out a while ago :o and I've been meaning to get new free anti-virus. Wondering if the IE problem was a virus or something, I decided to download the free AVG software. However, when I try to download it, it gets to 99% complete then totally stops. Does anybody know why this is and how I can get it to complete?

I then tried to download Fire Fox thinking it might be more secure and I might be able to download AVG via Fire Fox and it's done the same thing.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Gwen

What about downloading anything else. Can you, say, download Avast anti-virus ?

Try also flushing out your system with the excellent ccleaner.

I would avoid AVG, there are far better out there just now.

Either go for one of the free versions of Avira, Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials which you can download from here at filehippo.com.........

    http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus/

As Busty says also download CCleaner also from filehippo.com.....
(When you have downloaded CCleaner it will ask you at some stage if you want to install Yahoo Toolbar,DON'T INSTALL IT!)

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

If you have used McAfee and don't want it anymore use the McAfee removal tool from here.............

    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

And finally just to make sure you don't have any nasties on your computer download Malwarebytes, you will need to update it when you start Malwarebytes and then run a full scan.
When the scan has finished post (copy & paste) the log file here.

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

PS. Make sure you download the latest versions of the above software.

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

    Hi all

Thanks for the replies. I've tried to download ccleaner. I opt to 'Save', is this right? It gets to 1 second remaining/99% downloaded and stops, so I end up cancelling it eventually. This was what was happening with the AVG software I was trying to download.

    Thanks

    Reset internet explorer
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.

Thanks aliEnRIK. I've just done that, but the ccleaner download is still stopping at 99%.

Try downloading Malwarebytes, if that gets stuck at 99% then if you can get access to another computer download Superantispyware Portable to a usb memory stick and use it on the infected computer.

    Superantispyware portable link...............

I don't know if the disk is full. How do I find out?

I'll try and download these onto another computer and transfer, but it'll probably be next weekend now before I can do that.
