Just love the way that on this board, (according to some) you have to be clairvoyant before you even consider getting a dog cos woe betide you if your circumstances change and the perfect lifestyle ( as laid down by so many do gooders here) that you thought you had changes

Now my Father has Alzheimers, my mother is now in hospital with a stroke, Im the carer for both, I also have arthritis to the extent I can barely move myself some days.
My dog sleeps a lot. I guess Im one of those dreadful owners who really shouldnt get a dog Oh... and seeing as Im the only one in this house who has a job I also work a 30 hour week

For a start a thirty hour week isn't full time and thus your circumstances are outside the scope of the debate. Similarly opting to get a dog in spite of the fact people aren't home is not the same as someone whose circumstances have altered in an unforseen manner.

My opinion is that it is selfish to get a dog knowing the dog is going to be alone for long periods, just in the same way that being child-free by choice is a selfish act. ;) There were generalisations made with caveats, not blanket condemnation. I don't take those who do not like indoor cats as a personal affront, it's a shame the working dog owners do not think the same way. :(

Why don't we just have the one thread for having long, rambling and unltimatly pointless rows? The OP is long gone from here, the original argument was about a training device not working dog owners, and this isn't a discussion so much as it is a bunch of people explaining why their individual viewpoints are right and everyone else is wrong. I doubt anyone is going to read this and change their opinions/actions accordingly.

And in that long poitnless argument thread I could point out that damn near everyone in here could do with having a thicker skin and less moral outrage. And a disclaimer on every post saying "This is the opinion of this [poster], no more, no less." rather than every post coming like an info-dump from God.

    Anyway.... back to the topic

Yes I have experience of a Husher - although it didn't look much like the one in the link. About 10 years ago one was suggested to me - it was like a Mikki muzzle but with elastic (v. strong) on the sides. It was designed to prevent the dog from fully opening it's mouth. Only tried it on the dog for 30 mins or so and the bark turned to an annoying whine.

My conclusion was the Husher was a control method rather than a cure and was not what I wanted.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

I think actually the point was more for people who already work full time and decide to get a dog. Also surely you should consider your four legged buddy when you decide to move into that full time role?

To be fair if people didn't debate on this board they would be merged with another board due to inactivity. I personally think its a good thing that people have differing views. Also that issues can develop and expand. Its sad that whenever people disagree on things there is always someone who takes the fact there is a disagrement personally. Although they are better than the people who seem to take a disagreement to their view as a personal attack on the whole of mankind.

I do enjoy the debates myself, but they get boring when they develop into "You're cruel to animals!" "No, U!" slanging matches.
I very much agree with your sentiments about taking things personally. Sometimes it's good to leave the computer alone for a while and come back to it. Preferably after counting to ten, getting some fresh air and looking at pictures of fluffy things.:D

Makes you wonder how the homeless ever manage to look after a dog properly ;)

It is intresting that most homeless people with dogs don't need a lead and the dog will quitely plod along with them. Wont' show any agression to other dogs or people. No recall problems. Maybe its the homeless people who should be doing the dog training courses.

    Hi all,

A friend of mine who works as dog behaviourist told me about HUSHER.

Has anyone got any experience of using one?

    Thanks a lot

Sorry i cannot help you with your question, but what if you have a dog such as old English bull, or pug, these would not be of any use as there snouts are to short, this also goes for mussels to,

i know you never said you are going to use one, but me personally i would not recommend them, as i can see (probably not on purpose) someone over using them every time there dog barks.

A dog barks for a reason - find out what that reason is and you can usually stop the barking.

I know what my dog barks at, its the TV, but how can i put a stop to this? i would be very great full for any good suggestions that might help me train her to stop doing this, she is a bull/pug and is 14 months old, her mum is a true old English, her dad a true pug, and a very lovely playful strong (i cannot put bit**, its a swear word lol) dog she is, although she is almost 20KG im almost certain she thinks she is a little pug as she likes to sit on my shoulders when i watch TV.

    Thanks

Is it the noise or the movement on the TV?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
