Have I just got a free phone from Carphone?

Its been 4 weeks and Carphone Warehouse have not instructed T-Mobile to register our account.

We realised we couldnt make texts from the sim and we called TMobile, who have the number down as inactive and told us to go back to Carphone to get the contract connected.

Carphone will not know the contract is not connected and wont chase it. I paid £49.99 for the phone (its £499.00 sim only!) I know this because I have spoken to several friends who work for them.

What, if anything could happen out of this? No direct debit has been taken, no welcome letters have been recieved, and I cant even sign up for online billing as the number isnt recognised! So I've been using a pay as you go sim!

Am I a jammy git or should I watch out? :rotfl:I'd love it if I was contract free, we've just had a baby!

More than likely their back office team will manually connect it, the credit check is only valid for 30 days though normally.

Don't count on that. I've benefited in a similar way from their incompetence before.

I believe we aren't the only ones, I've heard from two other people online that a similar story happened and hey landed up with a free phone.

I will leave the money for them to take by DD, but if its not touch then I guess I'll be having a lil saving each month. But it's there if they want it!

When I used to work for Virgin the sales team often c0cked up and sent out phones without putting the actual contract on the SIM so customers would end up with a free phone on PAYG! The only way we'd find out is if the customer called to find out where their free mins and texts were. God knows how many customers realised what had happened and kept their mouths shut!

This is what we almost did. My OH called the network and told them the number. They asked if it was a PAYG or contract?!?!?
They then said it was an old closed PAYG number.
The customer service rep had no idea, he was stumped, and told us to go back to CPW.

We asked a few forums and decided to keep quite and act like we dont know.

The plan was to finish my current contract and move onto that when it was up in April. So I wouldnt have been none the wiser anyway!

Fingers crossed. I try to fight my conscience with the fact I paid £70 to CPW in phone insurance for a year I was unaware of, and didnt even have the phones! So they have had plenty from me ;)

Remember they'll know they dispatched something to you, and you probably signed for it so it's not entirely an unknown to them. Even money says they have the serial no and dispatch detaisl tied up together somewhere so they may well come for you later, if it's on your delivery note it's on their computers somewhere.

    Although probably not...

Can they use the IMEI number to lock it or report it stolen?

They could if the OP doesn't pay if/when they require her/him to, but s/he has already said s/he has the money there just in case.
