Wrong . The vic only checks the vehicles identity, to make sure its not been rung. MOT checks roadworthiness

I can tell you now 110% that not all cat C's require a Vic check. How do I know this?

I am a legitimate licensed motor salvage operator who buys and sells salvage vehicles, most sourced from insurance companies. I bought 14 last year that were cat C and didn't need a vic. Vosa will tell you whether there is a vic marker on the vehicle if you ring them. Also you can use tha ask gov site, do a vehicle details enquiry (its free) as if you were looking to re tax the vehicle. This will say if there is a vic marker. Also the cat C's that don't require a VIC test have no markings on the log book. The ones that have had a vic come back statingt that the vehicle has undergone repairs following a crash/claim. They do still show up as CAT C regardless of the VIC test when you HPI them.

    Hope this helps.

Interesting philosophical question along the lines of if a tree falls and there is no-one to hear it does it make a noise?

If you buy a cat C that doesn’t have the log book marked and doesn’t have the VIC marker is it really a cat c?

I think that CAT C is a legal status under which you must get a VIC before you can re-tax it. If it doesn’t have that status then it’s not a cat c, it’s just a damaged car.

I fully understand what you're saying vaio (apart from the tree bit:D) and I was of the same opinion until I bought several cat C's and tried to book them in for a vic. Vosa wouldn't carry them out unless a marker had been set, which it hadn't, but on hpi's the vehicle still showed as a cat c. When I rang vos they confirmed not all cat C's need vic tests, contrary to some of their publications.

If anyone is still unsure here is the number I use at vosa
    VOSA on 0300 123 9000.

Yes, it would still be as the cost of repairs would exceed the PAV otherwise it would be a cat d and also if the original owner bought back the salvage then they could still tax the car. The VIC marker just prevents a new logbook being released.

I'll back JPS29 on this one.

    I purchased a Cat C 306 a couple of years back..

Didnt require a Vic check and DVLA issued the V5 with no issues.
  • You're both correct in a way.

All cat C vehicles will require a VIC check. However, if insurance companies are slow in updating their records, its perfectly plausable to have a V5 issued in the meantime. There can also be errors in updating DVLA records.

    A motorbike doesnt need a VIC even if it's a Cat C.

    Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email enquiry dated 2nd September 2009 concerning the
    above.

Motorbikes are not in the VIC scheme, only cars would require a VIC.

I hope this information has assisted you with your enquiry, but if you have
any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.

    Kind Regards,
    Kristy

cat c cars need a VIC which is a very basic check to see if the reg matches the VIN numbers. Vehicle Identity check.

Some times the status of cars are reported to HPI and DVLA late and its very possible to get a V5 during this time. I have done so in the past. However if the car shows on HPI as cat C you will not be able to get the V5 without a VIC. Also cannot get road tax without a V5 and they will not give a road tax at the DVLA office as it will show VIC outstanding.

If the car gets MOT after the car is fixed and put back on road, how would this make the MOT VOID? It would not make the MOT VOID apart from this without a valid MOT you cannot do a VIC.

To the poster of the thread, the trader has lied to you if he described the item as HPI clear. I do believe that they do have to tell you that it is a cat C if they know, i doubt the trader will say ah yes i knew it but didnt tell you.

Did you ask if it was HPI clear?

Don't know if you can answer this but I have bought a car which i believe to be a Cat C.There is no VIC marker set against it,so how do I fill out V62 form.Do I declare it as a Cat C or x the box which states V52 lost or destroyed and pay the £25?
