I am going to take up the suggestions given in various replies..I am also going to write to John Varley direct.
I think it is a ridiculous situation that something so straightforward cannot be sorted out within the branch where my mother was known...and where I and my husband are now almost part of the furnishings!0 -

Oh gosh - do you think they will let me in? I am in Suffolk.0

This is the telephone number for Barclays Customer Relations
0800 282 390
Call them & tell them what's happened. Make sure you make a note of the name of the person you speak to & the time of the call.
The time to write to them will be after this is sorted out, when you can make a formal complaint about the appalling service you have had.
Good Luck, I hope you get things sorted soonThanks to all who post comps :A :T0 -
Many thanks.
This morning I had a telephone call from the advisor at my local branch - her manager got hold of the necessary people, gave them a rollicking, and has been told the money will be transferred to my own account in the next 5 days.
Why does it take 5 days to transfer from one Barclays account to another? It should be instant.
I won't hold my breath, but I have some hope!
Once this has happened I will complain about the shoddy service in no uncertain terms.0 -

Well, yes, I appreciate paperwork takes days - but what I did not write is that the advisor told me HO said my mum's 'case' was formally closed on 24 February - yet it could take another 5 days from today for the money to be moved...
and if they had not been reminded, how much longer would they have sat on it before doing anything?
Because a manager in HO is now dealing with it.
I am stilll refusing to hold my breath!:D0 -

long shot that the paper actually selects your letter to do something about but it will only take 5 mins to write.
Exactly what I was going to suggest. A brief letter detailing what you have told us and the efforts you have made to get this resolved to something like the Sunday Times will generate lots of bad publicity. The Times financial person will have contacts who will be able to speak to HO and get things done.
I hope Barclays will also be paying interest on this money.
I wouldn't go down the email route personally, I would send them a letter recorded delivery then you have everything nicely tracked."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -

I am certainly not just going to let this lie - as my husband pointed out this morning after the phone call, if we had used solicitors to sort out the probate, the amount of letter writing/phone calling would have cost us a great deal.
Luckily (in a sad way) we have been through probate before and know what is required.
Never had this hassle though.:(0
