Put your iron setting on warm and using a plastic spatula, shear off the plastic, and use tweezers to pull away any that is in the steam holes.
Oh Ann that happens to me all the time a good deed gone bad I found the above on google someone may come along with another tip

Martin's book suggests using bicarbonate of soda (mixing several spoons into a paste) and then rubbing onto ovens to clean them. That might do?

Have found an identical iron on Argos website - but I bet she'd notice the difference! Much better if I can clean it and she will never know any better!
