Glad its all over with!Hi..well she got into the local comp which she was pleased with..the first call off her friend was a passed, then another..imagine the face..another passed..then the rest called prob over half are going to the comp so she is happy. Cheepskate i agree with you to a certain extent but my dd is quite quiet and will thrive far more in an environment she is happy in rather than being in a better school.
Glad its all over with!
We are in Devon btw for those of you who dont have it still..personally i think it should be banned as has been quite stressful for in a way nothing BUT least she tried and we are very proud of her.

Despite having gone to a grammar school myself many years ago, there are several problems why grammar schools and the 11+ in my opinion, are not a good thing.
The very fact that they are creaming off many of the more able and academically inclined children means the other schools in the area are handicapped in the school league tables and get a reputation for being 'less good'. Obviously the other 'comprehensive' schools will get fewer high achievers and A to C passes in the GCSE stakes.
Children often look upon the 11+ as a pass or fail thing, as do some of their parents, so often think they are failures at an early age. It is not possible to say 'All children who got x percent or more pass and are worthy of an academic schooling, and all children who get lower than x percent fail and are less likely to do well.' Each year there are some children who will be borderline. Depending on the number of entrants this year child A will be deemed able to benefit from a more academic education whereas if she/he had taken it last year or next year they may have not. Equally this year child B might not pass but next year or last year would have.
The vociferous people who campaign for the retention of grammar schools are usually those whose children are bright and are more likely to get into them, or people who have been to grammar schools themselves. Well run comprehensive schools in a non-selective local authority area can produce relatively the same or better results for more children than the equivalent area where there are selective grammar schools.
Just my opinion. My six grandchildren are all doing really well in schools which are essentially comprehensives, no matter what they might call themselves these days.0 -
Hi yes to clarify i guess she 'failed' but i hate using that term.
I know I'm repeating myself - but no she didn't so there is no need for you to use that term. She sat an exam and didn't get enough marks to make the grammar school's intake this year. As someone else has pointed it out it could be that another year she would have done. It's not a pass/fail situation, although I understand why it is seen in that way.
Good luck to her at her new school, I'm sure she will be fine.No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
Hi Gabyjane both my 2 older DD "failed" their 11+ exam and have gone to the local high schools. At 16 and 14 they are both happy ,bright well adjusted young women .With a good group of friend and doing well at their studies. I don't feel that they have failed just got into a better school for them.0

Loftus thankyou..i know it is not a fail it's just how many people have said 'so did she pass or fail' of course you think 'nightmare sounds awful to say fail' i know what you are saying..luckily she doesnt seemed phased so i'm happy!
ruthy1230 thankyou im glad your dd's are getting on well..nice to hear!
Dh deals with the local grammer a lot with the police..at one point he didnt want her going there due to issues with drugs etc and some of them are equally as ignorant etc as kids at comp so this is why we were sided neither one way or another! Guess it's fate hey!
Thanks for the replys x0
