Grammar schools are fantastic. I went to one and i would never have done as well if i went to the local comprehensive.
It's such a shame they don't have them everywhere. I also am from Kent :)

I read it as her dd failed and then two friends rang to say they'd passed, so she was upset, but then the majority of her friends called to say they too had failed it and will be going to the comp....

She seems happy anyway, which is the main thing! :D

They do in Kent, I went to one and had to do the 11+. IIRC, it was a different coloured form that said you'd got in and your choice of school - I was down the road from Canterbury but closer to the other grammar in Folkestone, so there I went. And the uniform was horrific.

    Good luck though!

That'll be the same school I went to then! Beige jumper anyone?!

OP - glad your daughter is happy with her new school.

I'm all in favour of the 11+ and grammar schools. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at secondary school.
  • i think i read somewhere that nobody "fails" the 11+ anymore...
the grammar schools just take the ones with the best results :);)
  • Gabyjane- I know you said you were in devon and just wanted to say if it is TGGS you are talking about I went there and wouldn't wish that place on anybody!
Awful, awful school (ok it was a few :o years ago I was there).
Yes performance wise they do very well but when it comes to life experiences and the teaching of a varied cirriculum then they fail IMO.

I remember being in assembly once and it had come to the attention of the headmistress that 2 students(all girls school) had had an arguement on a friday night at a party and she told the school that any girls who hang out at parties where boys were present were prostitutes and protection should be used if anyone were to hold hands with boys:eek:
    :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
May I add she is no longer the headmistress at that school:cool:

Did she want you to stick condoms over your hands?

Also another one who lived in Kent and had to sit 11+ exams. That was.......erm.......1990/91 ish. lol

I had no idea it wasn't a national thing, so it was quite surprising to hear otherwise.

Gabyjane, I'm glad your daughter is happy. That is the most important thing.

I hadn't realised it wasn't a national thing either - yep, another Kent girl:o I did the 13+ though (don't think anywhere does that now?). Although I did quite well at the local Grammar School, I didnt really like it and I missed my previous secondary school (which was also a good school) and often wished I'd stayed there. I still live near the schools now and in just 3 years time my eldest will taking the 11+ too:eek: I'll be happy with which ever school she wants to go or gets into:D

GabyJane - best of luck to your daughter when she starts secondary school
Many lovely wins over the years - thanks to all that post:A
