although, just my luck, the vodafone eforum is unavailable as i write this, the general feeling from the users and mods was; nexus one canned with htc desire in its place. has all that changed now?

Maybe, but the point remains the Pre is not new and won't get much advertising, it will be the latest and greatest new phone.

But as you said yourself Palm are doing exactly that with the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus. updating the phone a year on just like apple did.

Should Palm have tried the direct to customer model Google have, maybe, but they didn't and they have lost out.

I thought Vodafone does not operate directly in the french market it's a joint venture with someone else VF may or may not be calling the shots in tems of phone choice. It will be interesting to see if SFR promote the Pre over the iPhone, I suspect not, Apple are rumoured to be able to forcethe mobilce's to do the advertising to support the product. Palm is the underdog and will not be able to force that.

As I said in the other pre thread you have going, Vodafone will probably be heavily pushing the Nexus one next, the Pre is pretty much history now.

When Apple release a new feature you have to sit on youre current 2 year deal or sell your phone and take out a new contract to get that new feature on a handset. Palm added video capture as did Apple but palm did an over the air update to your current phone, no need to buy and sell.

It will have to do something out of this world to justify the money and i think now they will be pushing you to get the iPad. Again with that they are creaming money from you. The 1st one will have WIFI then the second one will have a mobile phone connection on it and as with the video capture on the iphone you will have to buy a new unit to get it.

LOL - I have pictures flashing through my head of Dom Joly 'a likes' screaming into an iPad - together with an 'iHaversack' to carry it around in....
Maybe I should register the iHaversack as a trademark ;)

4G is, as you may expect, a step up from 3G. Basically it just means its an even faster connection than 3G.

"4G" is only the code name at the minute, and I would be suprised if the phone came out capable of handling 4G, especially seeing as no mobile network currently offers 4G.

I suspect Apple will annouce their new handset in around June, and I would expect a better camera with flash, faster processor, more ram and maybe the ability to run more than one app at a time. A better battery life and improved screen would also be expected in my opinion.

Obviously, I'm purely speculating, but thats the kind of thing I would like to see.

Unlikely. They're complimentary products. The iPad can't make phone calls. And doesn't fit in your pocket!
Again with that they are creaming money from you. The 1st one will have WIFI then the second one will have a mobile phone connection on it and as with the video capture on the iphone you will have to buy a new unit to get it.
Or alternatively, offering choice and targetting different markets. A lot of people will only use the iPad at home so can just get the WiFi version and save ~£100 on the 3G version (which isn't a 'second one', it'll appear about a month later) that people who want to have data on the move can buy if they want it.

IMHO the 4th iPhone will be another incremental release, offering a higher-res camera with flash and maybe a better screen and larger memory options but with no multitasking etc in the OS. And it'll still sell by the bucketload....much to the annoyance of people who spend an inordinate amount of time trying to convince [STRIKE]themselves[/STRIKE] everyone they should've bought something else.

It doesn't annoy me whatsoever, and i don't need to convince anyone to buy anything. I know quite a few who have got one and then sent it back due to the huge cost involved in having one. Palms attitude towards it's customers is better than Apples. It took 3 years to get video capture on the iphone and you had to buy a new unit yet the Pre had it within under a year and all you had to do was download an update for it.
If the iphone wasn't so expensive to buy and run and Apple didn't rip you off and could do some of the things the Pre could isuch as QWERTY keyboard, OS updates instead of buying a new unit, replace the battery and the like i might just get one.

The rumour mill is claiming, a 5 meg camera with flash, a front facing camera, up to 128 gig memory, a touch sensitive case, new case design, and a higher res screen.

But knowing how Apple like to mess with people, it could have no camera at all, have a black and white screen and be made from wood. . .
