I might ring sky would they have to send some kit out or would they just give a security code to type into laptop to connect?

Sky will send you a router and arrange to have broadband enabled on your phone line by BT Openreach. You can't just 'type a security code into your laptop', you would have no wireless signal to connect to and no broadband signal on the line anyway.
You still haven't told us what exchange you are on, so no-one can tell you if you can get it free or not.

You have to take your calls and line rental with them to get the free broadband. And you line will be LLU'd.
No LLU on the exchange, no free broadband.

    No it's not.
As already advised, no-one can tell you the cost without knowing what exchange you are on. https://www.samknows.com, exchange search.
If you are non-LLU, it's £17 for Sky Connect (non LLU service).
If you are LLU for Sky , it's free with the Base package.

Assuming you are in a Sky LLU area as macman said, to get the free Sky broadband you need to take the Sky Talk Freetime, which is an evening and weekend call plan - BUT, this is also free.

You don't need to have Sky line rental to get Sky Talk Freetime or Sky broadband. So you can get free Sky broadband Base if you take the free Sky Talk Freetime call plan and have a BT phone line.

Apologies, dylan you are quite correct, you don't have to take Sky line rental. The only variable here is the exchange/LLU info, for which we are still waiting...

Just remember that you will no longer be able to hop back onto BT to keep your Caller Display free if you go down this route.

This isn't Talk Talk, put your number in it is quite safe, without the information, nobody can help you.
