Ok, stupid cooking question time. If I cook fruit, does it still have the same calories? Say, if I stewed some apples but didn't put in any extra sugar, would it just be like eating apples or would it be worse?

Generally it will stay the same... However the 'makeup' of the food changes which in essence changes the amount of time your body take to metabolize it. However thats more a GI system not a calories in vs calories out system. The general rule of thumb though is they will stay the same unless you add something to it or cook it in something with calories. However its better to weigh and work out the calories after cooking as some sugars etc can be lost within the water... If you want to have a perfect calorie consumed calculation :o

However if you want to know specifically about apples look here :D

i think the thing with stewed fruit is that it cooks down so much that you eat more of it compared to the equivalent whole fruit - eg - 5 apples stewed might be a portion, but you wouldn't eat 5 apples in 1 sitting.... iyswim...

On the SW diet, eating apples raw are classed as 'free' food - you can eat as many as you like, but if you stew them you have to start counting them as syns - something to do with the sugar content.

Same as bananas - eat as many as you like raw, but mash them up and you have to syn them

    Evening all,

Feeling slightly anxious as we have paid a deposit on a new car for OH. We've been saving since becoming DF, but the savings pot is not quite big enough yet for the car. We've gone for the car we saw today, as it was (apparently) very good condition and a bargain. It ended up being more than expected as the seller had some additional parts for it which he did a good deal on but meant we need to "top up" how much we are spending on it as against how much we currently have saved. I think it will all be fine as I have extra money in my personal account but can't remember my online login :( It looked OK on the cashpoint but we both feel a little anxious until we can see everything in black and white.

I've logged into the joint account and my Feb pay has already hit there, leaving my personal A/C which means it should be fine, but would be nice to see both onscreen.

We just need to be careful for March expenditure, to keep in the black. We are redoing our mortgage as our fixed rate ends in April (looks like we can start to OP due to lower monthly payments :)) so I'm a little concerned that we got carried away with having saved up and me saying "It is OK, I'll top up the funds saved so far".

Great to be in this position tho, even tho we fear we should have hung on and kept saving in the car fund. Fingers crossed it all works out OK.

True scaredy, plus the apples/fruit will be much much more sweeter now its been stewed which isnt good if you are diabetic or using a GI system. Its also generally why doctors/onlince calorie counters will not class a portion of stewed fruit as one of your '5 a day' as its nutritional content is 'nothing' compared to a ripe, fresh apple.

Calories/Gi systems/excercise calories/portions are a hard thing to master. I only 'just' got there before I started CD. However for most people losing weight its simple cal in vs cal out + 2l of water + 5 servings of fresh/whole fruit/veg. Its when you start listening to your body and understanding you need to be on GI/Gluten free/vegan etc that it starts to get complicated _confused__by_ChaosEmeraldHunter.gif
