Be grateful she only wants a purple bedroom and not purple hair! I'm 23 and my mum is still despairing at my purple hair :p

The bedroom I have at my parents is purple (was my sisters choice years ago as I'm now in her old room and my old bedroom is now my living room:D). It has lilac wall paper on the walls, matching lilac curtains, dark purple paint on all the edging as well as the radiator and a lilac painted door. The room has a wall that is pine (not painted or anything) as it's the walk in wardrobe and en suite shower that was added. It looks really nice. It now has laminate down but it was a deep purple carpet before that was very nice. The laminate is easier to clean though :o.

My mum really likes it when I have purple in my hair :rotfl:. She loves purple though. If my mum thought she could pull it off I'm sure she'd have purple streaks put in lol.

OP with regards to your DD wanting to decorate her bedroom I think you should just let her but give her a budget and stick to it. If she goes over it the rest comes out of her pocket money (can't say fairer than that!). My parents let me do what I wanted with my room (now rooms) as they see it as my space. It cost me around £50 for all the paint for my fiances and my living room over a year and a half ago (not quite 2). We did a japanese style - red, creams, white and black. My parents were never keen on the idea when I pitched it to them years ago but said we could decorate how we wanted. They went away on holiday and while they were away we did the room. When they came back they decided they really liked it. Sometimes you have to see the outcome. I'm sure my parents thought my sister mad for how much purple was in this room but it turned out lovely to be honest!

I like the idea of using two shades of colour on the walls, perhaps lilac on top or a more neutral white/cream type colour. Alternatively, if she insists on having the walls completely dark, try to include large areas of lighter patterns and/or lighter coloured wall hangings and/or mirrors to break it up. If she is at all artistic, you could suggest she paints a large mural with silver/white paint, or a series of smaller patterns or pictures around the room. As a teenager, a friend of mine painted a large rose bush on her wall/ceiling which was positioned so it looked as though it was growing out of her waste paper basket. Needless to say I was jealous!

  • I would let her have it whatever colour she wants, on the understanding that she doesn't want anything that can't be undone with a coat of paint (i.e. no painting the floorboards purple!) .

  • I used to have a purple and lime green colour scheme and it was great for a couple of years but then really started to annoy me so I toned it down slightly with white instead of lime green. I highly recommend Dulux Happy purple -it's bright and modern and would look good as a feature wall - have you checked out Crown and Dulux websites for their room designers where you can see what your daughter's room might look like with the colours you choose. I also like the option of a stripe/wide band of colour round the room or a feature wall of different colour purple/lilac stripes (done with £1 tester pots)

Purple carpet might be too much - maybe as others have said a neutral one with a big fluffy rug. Accesory wise I saw different coloured paper lampshades in B&Q and silver looks great with all shades of purple.

I would definitely go with giving her a budget - surely she would enjoy working out what she wants to go for or if she's into crafts making some cushion covers/fabric or paper covered storage boxes to match her colour scheme

    I have a purple bedroom!
With cream carpets and curtains. Pine furniture goes just fine.
I have one wall a mulberry colour, then I have 3 walls of dulux dusted damson I think, which is like a greyish lilac colour, darker than girly lilac. I wanted all dark purple but hubby said no!
  • I've always let my daughter choose how she wants her room since we finally bought our house.

It was dalmaitions first (she was 6) so white walls with black spots on & 101 dalmations bedding & curtains.

At 9 we repainted & she went for 'funky' colours from b&q 2 fushia walls 2 purple (quite dark) & lilac curtains she loved it thought it was really grown up!

We've just had our loft done so she has our old room - more decorating - she's 13 now & has gone for white walls with horizontal stripes on 1 wall (just 6 in a bank across the middle), vertical on 1 wall (the same 6 colours on 1 side) & a large canvas which she decorated with the same colours. The last wall is window. She has carpet & curtains which match a particular coloured stripe. It sounded horrible to start with but even my dh agrees it turned out really well.

I think what i'm trying to say is as it's her room & her space i've always let her have it how she wants (within budget obviously!)

    Enjoy painting!

We let her have her own way and the walls are now metallic purple! It's like a violet colour really. It had to have a special undercoat and that looked nice on its own. The metallic paint has been a bit of a nightmare (3 coats so far!) but I think it's going to be cosy - it reminds me of a night sky. Going to pick the carpet tomorrow. Not quite what i'd have picked, but it is her room, and it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

I'll post a picture once it's finished. The colour is from B&Qs Funky colours range and it's called Vivid. There are 2 Vivid's, but it's the metallic one. I can't find the colour online.

Her bedroom will be a mish-mash probably. :D
