purple bedroom?

We're planning on redecorating my 14yo daughter's bedroom. We moved house 2 summers ago and are just getting round to it. :o

She's adamant that she wants a purple room. She already has a lilac roller blind, but that's it. She wants a purple carpet and purple walls. I'm thinking it's going to all be a bit much (we're not quite magnolia people, but close!)

She says she wants everything dark purple too. It'd be like the inside of a coffin.

I want to give her what she wants - within reason, but really don't fancy turning it into some goth bolthole (she's not a goth btw :D )

Anyone out there with good ideas? If I see something I like, i'm okay, but I don't have particulary good imagination when it comes to decorating.

What colour could co-ordinate with purple? What shade of purple wouldn't be too oppressive? I was thinking of maybe lime green accessories (lamp, cushions?) I don't want to wallpaper (because a) I can't wallpaper, and b) it costs too much to get someone in). We're pretty good with a paintbrush and roller though.

I was also thinking of maybe getting a spirit level and tape and paint some horizontal stripes around the room - or get some circle stencils?

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Ha sshe shown you any pics of what she wants or has she just got "purple" in her head? Can you get her to start googling for pictures if not? She might refine her ideas then!!

There are a couple of purple bedroom ideas here. This one is dark, but clean and simple and still fresh!

This one is not dark, but I think it's a really workable/adaptable scheme for a teenage bedroom.

I wouldn't go with a purple carpet, a neutral beige/stone would still work with these schemes. She could add a purple rug. At the end of the day though, it's her space and as long as you're not spending a lot of money on it and she realises she's got to live with it, I'd go with what she fancied! She can always get accessories as Birthday pressies etc to keep the cost down

How about 1 full on purple wall and 3 light lilac walls? Or pale lilac walls with purple material, or curtains, hanging on the walls? Something like these

(I'm not recommending that seller, it was just the first one I found).

You could drape them across the ceiling too with the ends hanging down and it would make the room look kind of like the inside of a 4 poster bed.

She'd still get the goth purple effect, but it'll be a lot easier for you to paint over the walls in a few years when she's bored with the black-hole-of-calcutta-effect.

The second room is the colour of her blind.

I like the first one. More of an aubergine colour. It looks more sophisticated (unlike my daughter ). Not sure how it would look with a pine headboard and bedside cabinet. :)

I've seen some lovely bedding but they're all on American websites.

i feature wall of purple would look good with any earthy colour for the other walls.
Purple carpet and cushions would look good but i would avoid ceiling drapes as they are nothing but dust collectors

I was actually thinking of putting fabric along the back wall. She has a full-size door, right in the middle of the wall, which goes into a cupboard in the eaves, which is rarely used. Her room's not that big and it means it looks a bit strange if I put her bed against that wall. The only thing about that idea is that the only 2 electric sockets are on the same wall, either side of the cupboard door, and they'd be covered over with fabric. I suppose I could just hang fabric in front of the door?

My Daughter has the same colour as the second photo on her walls, and the same colour in the roller blind. I have to have the same coloured carpets throughout the house, I can't stand the bedroom doors open and seeing 4 different colours of carpet, so we have honey/biscuit colour carpets which complements the pine furniture in all the bedrooms. I would say my dd rooms is one of the nicest in the house, the colour is so peaceful looking, but warm with it. The rest of the house other than DS room is in neutral shades, I'm useless with colour.

I'd like to paint the door and its facings to blend in with the walls but my husband won't have it - every door and skirting in the house is varnished wood. That's okay, but this door sticks out like a sore thumb.

I might just have to work on him a bit more on that idea.

With respect how much time are you going to spend in this room? Paint the walls the purple of her choosing and then choose the carpet and furnishings afterwards. If she hates it she is the only one who has to live with it, and it really doesn't cost that much to paint it all out again in a year or two. At 14 I'd have loathed my mum toning down my choice of decor, its akin to choosing her clothes.

Very easy to paint with a couple of coats of satin-finish paint and really helps tie in a scheme when painted imo..............!!
