purple bedroom?

  • I think a purple bedroom will look fantastic. I totally agree that you have to let her have it her way. My bedroom was decorated when I was 6 and I wanted it blue. My mum wouldn't let me and made me have it green, and I was stuck with that horrible green and white bedroom until I was an adult. I was never allowed to change it even when I was a teenager. It was only when I was 21 and my boyfriend said he'd decorate it with me that my dad stepped in and said he'd do it. I chose orange, pink and yellow. My mum was aghast but when it was finished she admitted it looked really nice. I am still annoyed with my mum for not letting me have blue as a kid though.

Anyway, can you show her lots of pictures of purple themed rooms to get some ideas? I understand that all dark purple may make the room seem dark and gloomy so find some nice modern rooms. I think white will make the purple stand out more than it being all purple.

Crown Paint have a good thing on their website where you paint the room on the screen so you can see which colours look good together and if it will be too dark. Go to their website and click on colour schemes.

I know. I'm torn. I want to give her what she wants, but at the same time she's a solitary soul and sits for hours up there. I don't want to make it gloomy.

At 14 I wasn't even allowed to put a poster on the walls. I had no say in how my bedroom was decorated. :D

Well, then you understand clearly what it's like to have no control over your environment. My dd has had lots of various colours in her room, from pink and yellow when she was a toddler through bright red and black when she went through a strange emo-goth phase to what it is now: pink, green and white (sound awful but it's nice).

Over the years, my dd's bedroom has reflected the changes in her life, her fashion, her music, her art course, and now her photography course, her changing personality. When I walk into my dd's room (rarely) I have a strong feeling that it is hers. It reflects her. Over the years, she has developped her sense of taste and now at 17 she is also quite able to paint the room herself - without my help (apart from buying the paint)

Discuss it with your dd. She is 14. She is quite able to choose the colour and quite able to understand your concerns about it being too dark. You should be able to find a compromise of sorts, without forcing her to adhere to your taste. If not, and she finds it too dark later, then she can live with it!

ETA to add: small confession: my favourite colour is purple...

I think i'm veering towards painting the pine furniture. There's a tall chest of drawers, a bedside cabinet and headboard. It's good stuff - the drawers have dovetail joints. It's really too good to replace. We've painted pine cupboard doors (i'm sure the previous owner just used a couple of bath panels as doors! ) and they came up well. Hubby took the doors off and laid them flat in the garage to paint with eggshell paint.

That ought to lighten up the room if we do decide to go darker.

I was searching Google for tips on painting pine furniture and a link to these forums came up.

I think this looks lovely. :)

I was actually thinking of putting fabric along the back wall. She has a full-size door, right in the middle of the wall, which goes into a cupboard in the eaves, which is rarely used. Her room's not that big and it means it looks a bit strange if I put her bed against that wall. The only thing about that idea is that the only 2 electric sockets are on the same wall, either side of the cupboard door, and they'd be covered over with fabric. I suppose I could just hang fabric in front of the door?

the fabric is relatively easy. Seal that area of the fabric with some PVA to stop it fraying then, when it's dry, cut a hole slightly smaller than the socket to allow you some 'wriggle room' to get a good fit. make small diagonal cuts out from the corners and trim to fit. Use a strong mix of wallpaper paste or some double sided tape (easier to get off than PVA when you want to redecorate) to stick the fabric to the wall around the socket and then finish with a finger plate like this.

    Sorry I couldn't find a better image

Just remember to sand it well before you paint or it'll peel. I'm not keen on pine so I think it looks great!

Hi well i would go for purple wall..accesories and keep the rest neutral..if she is anything like my dd she will change her mind in a year!

am in the same boat but think i have it sorted..the 1st pic in a post near the start is the colour i'm doing (the aubergine) the feature wall with a wall decal on it of a huge dandelion in white then the rest white..she has an oak floor so quite neutral but the prob im having is doing her drawers she already has, they are the scandinavia range from argos so plain wood and very neutral again but would like to do the drawer fronts white and have bought new handles so will have a look at some suggestions on here. The blinds also are another issue as i spent a lot on the ones she has and she now doesnt like them..that tough and shes keeping them!..they are the spotty pink ones from argos!

    Good luck x

The second room is the colour of her blind.

I like the first one. More of an aubergine colour. It looks more sophisticated (unlike my daughter ). Not sure how it would look with a pine headboard and bedside cabinet. :)

Very easy to paint with a couple of coats of satin-finish paint and really helps tie in a scheme when painted imo..............!!

Sorry to hijack but would this work on the scandinavia range from argos which is just solid plain pine..no varnish on?..or is eggshell better? do any of them need to be primed before?
    Thanks

A purple/lilac room will be lovely if it has lighter bits in it too. A large silver edged mirror, a huge photo frame to let her fill in with a collage of pop stars etc, (saves the walls), sparkling lights and light furniture.....pretty!

Be thankful that it's not black!

    Is this the range? http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6423825/Trail/searchtext%3ESCANDANAVIA.htm

It would probably work better than the pine we have. Ours is quite yellow.

We never primed the pine cupboard doors and they're fine with the eggshell paint. We just cleaned them and sanded them and gave them 2 or 3 coats (husband did them in the garage and I just left him to it. :o )

I might get some purple glass knobs for the drawers.
