Next step from Vanquis?

in Credit cards
I've had my Vanquis card over a year now, kept the account in good order always making more than the minimum payment and always on time, and had several credit limit increases.
I would like to get a credit card that I can move the balance to (one with a much better APR). I applied for a Aqua card but got declined for it last month, can anyone recommend a card that I might be accepted for? I did use the Barclaycard site to do a pre-application check but - computer says no...
Thanks.

How about a card from Sygma? Like Flybe or Silver? Or how about a Barclaycard? Use their pre-app checker0

Do Sygma/FlyBe accept people with a less than perfect credit file then?
Already tried the Barclaycard pre-application checker mate - it said they couldn't offer me anything for now.0 -
Flybe/Silver/Sygma has been known to accept people with a less than spotless credit file0

Without being too nosey
What sort of stuff have you still got showing on your credit file
Defaults/CCJs etc and how long before they drop off
May be helpful in pointing you in the right direction0 -

No CCJs, a few defaults from 2006 (linked to a failed IVA from 2006, but now in a DMP and have been for a few years now which I've always paid on time etc).
Only recent stuff showing on my credit file is my O2 mobile contract (all paid on time each month by DD), Vanquis (all paid on time each month), and curiously Nationwide who I've had a basic cash card account with since 2006 (no debit card or any type of lending but they still report to the CRAs so I guess that must count for something?).0 -
I wouldn't bother applying anywhere until you've had a full 36 months + of flawless running. Even then you may find it tough having several defaults rather than one or two amidst an otherwise good history.
Wait until the most recent default / missed payment is 3+ years old and try for a Sygma card (they're all scored the same, Silver looks best IMHO).
Good luck!Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Thanks izools. It has been 36+ months though - I think the latest default was in August 2006, and I've not been naughty since then LOL. Maybe the IVA mark in my Experian file is the major negative for my case perhaps?0

Capital One do a 'next step up' credit card - the Capital One Progress credit card.
The application criteria for it is:
- over 18 years
- uk resident
- registered on the electoral roll
- You have had credit before and are used to managing credit
- have had no CCJs or defaults in the last 12 months.
Capital One cards are quite to good have if you're monitoring your credit history too, as they offer free Identity alerts (any major change to your credit report) and you can access your Equifax credit report twice a year for free.
They also offer purchase protection insurance now, so the cardholder services are much better than with Vanquis - so might be worth thinking even if you just switched to the Capital One Classic.0 -

I meet all that criteria
Only have one CCj that is due to drop off next January
But was declined about six months ago
Then again Capital One just dont seem to like me
Applied to Sygma about six months ago turned down
but there was a couple of old defaults on my file then
also applied for MBNA December 09 and turned down
I'm going to wait until ive been running the Vanquis for a year and try someone else
Who not sure though0 -

I would say go for it with a Sygma card, and if they say no, then go for the Capital One Progress. It sounds like you have built up some reliable positive history recently over several accounts and this will sway in your favour greatly
As with anything though there's never any way to be sure, but at the end of they day they can only say no and you don't end up worse off!Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48
