Car hire excess insurance?

  • Not to worry found out now
    (and for those - who like me don't know either)
    CDW = Collision Damage waiver
    SLI = Supplemental liability insurance

    My word its a minefield out there - I'm well scared over hiring a car!

    i am in a similar situation. going to florida in the summer and have a fly drive package with monarch airlines. the car hire is from alamo.
    Included is basic car insurance (third party). I am not willing to pay £250/£350 for the upgraded insurance which monarch are trying to sell. Would the excess insurance e.g. insurance4carhire be adequate coverage if there was an accident?
    Would it be cheaper to get the upgrade insurance in florida at the alamo desk?
    i would be grateful for any advice given.

    IMO it would be cheaper paying for the insurance excess in the UK. insurance4carhire for example offer two policies, one for CDW/SLI and excess and another to cover wheels, tyres, windcressn or replaement of locks etc.

    These are annual policies so work out better value..

    It is worth contacting the tour operator or alamo to check their t&cs whether they will accept this type of cover.
  • I hope someone can help as I really don't know the answer here....

    we've booked to go to Florida in September - car hire 'included' but NO insurance for that at all - I don't know who the car hire is with
    Holiday was booked with Thomas Cook
    They are now trying to sell me car insurance for £364 - no idea what this does or doesn't cover!
    Help! There must be a cheaper way of doing this as when I was looking into car hire alone it was cheaper than that for the two weeks with insurance included!

    Thanks for any help that can be offered at all

    In both cases you must buy CDW/SLI insurance either from the tour operator or (more cheaply) form the likes of insurance4carhire.com.

    Basic Excess insurance is not enough - excess insurance is just a 'top up' to any CDW that carries an onerous excess. Decent CDW/SLI insurance from a 3rd party will not require additional excess insurance.

    To recap:

    CDW covers you for damage to the car - if it is crashed, stolen whatever. If you don;t have it then you have to pay the car rental firm for any damage whatosover to the car regardless of who is to blame.

    SLI covers damage you inflict on others - if you crash into someone else. If you don't have it and you hurt someone or something then you could be liable to a huge bill.

    Yes it is a minefield but if you have good CDW/SLI coverage then you can stop worrying.
  • you can search for good insurance company on internet and can get best deal out of this.

    Thanks for everyone's responses. Just found an annual policy for £49 from carhireexcess.com? Anyone heard of them? Its definitely the cheapest for US cover.

    £39.99 from https://www.icarhireinsurance.com :D

    I recently bought an annual policy from insurance4carehire.com and used the link in MSE forum member Razdva's profile which gave me £10 off.
