We are going to the US twice this year, hiring cars both times. Does anyone know what kind of excess insurance I should get and where the best value policy is? Thanks

The vast majority of brokers in the UK hire their cars with all the waivers included so you won't have an excess.
If you do end up finding one that does make you pay excess then its only about $300.The Summer Holiday of a Lifetime0 -

No the UK. You hire a car from a broker in the UK.

We have booked through a travel agent as it came in a deal with the flights, so I will check with them. Thanks for your help.0

Fly and drive deals often exclude buying your own excess insurance, have a good read of the small print of both your fly drive deal and excess insurance policy.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Just received my car hire voucher and its with Flexible Car Hire (using Alamo), but they are charging £2 per day for excess insurance, which would come to £32 altogether for our trip. It doesn't say what the excess would be however. I'm wondering whether it would be better to get separate excess cover on an annual basis as we are going out again in the summer? Anyone got any advice? much appreciated.0

There are a few companies out there offering excess insurance, I used questor a couple of years ago. Took out an annual world wide policy. When renting a vehicle direct from the foreign agency they often don't include the CDW/lDW element of insurance. In the US these can range from about £10 upwards a day so for a two week trip the policy was well worth it. Even better if you are making more than one journey.
If using a UK based broker they often have all inclusive deals so well worth looking at when purchaing your car rental separately from a package. I've found it often works out cheaper renting from a UK based broker.
Other policies also cover for lost keys, broken windows, damaged tyres etc, which again are offerred on location but cost up to $10 a day.0 -

insurance4carhire as mentioned above by richardw comes in at around £45 (from memory) for a year. You get quite decent cashback through quidco as well, so that for around the same money you'd spend with Alamo for just the one trip you'll be covered for the whole year.0 -
Thanks for everyone's responses. Just found an annual policy for £49 from carhireexcess.com? Anyone heard of them? Its definitely the cheapest for US cover.0
