McAfee or virginmedia security

  • how many machines these days come pre-installed with Symantec AV/IS? quite a lot, if not most and from a "personal" point of view the machines work SO MUCH better once it has been uninstalled, and general consensus between my IT colleagues is that it is still a bloated resource hog. with regards to it being complete rubbish, i never say that anything is rubbish (unless its written by me :P ) and believe that most things have a place/use i just refuse to use any piece of software that seriously cripples my machine.

i mean i usually run avast, but at present i dont run anything on this box, i dont download dodgy files i dont visit dodgy sites and when i boot up windows 7 on this machine security essentials scans the hard drive in its entirety... i am in no way condoning that people dont use any antivirus/malware/internet protection software, i just find the overheads annoying and choose to do without them.

I would say it is rubbish, comparing a paid for system with a free system [ Microsoft Security Essentials ] even if they both worked well means the paid for system is rubbish.

This is a money saving forum.

These products are not compatible, McAfee is a bloated resource hog, costs money, and does the job. Microsoft Security Essentials is not a bloated resource hog, does the job better, and is free.

;)hi guys. I would like some advice please. I recently subscribed to virginmedia broadband. It comes with a security centre for free but my problem is i already have mcAfee installed. Does anyone know which one is better? Thanks

one thing to point out with virgin media security is you only get the full protection if you have the large or x large broadband and not with the medium.

i have virgin media and i wouldn't touch their own security software.

don't misunderstand me, i haven't the faintest idea whether it's any good or not and i've never used it.

it's just on principle, i don't feel comfortable with the idea of my ISP also supplying my security software, particularly in light of all the talk about virgin media possibly introducing deep packet inspection and so on.

perhaps i'm being paranoid, but as far as i'm concerned, the less my ISP knows about me, the better. :A

Virgin Media - it's based on kaspersky

Remove mcafee and install the virgin media security package

or for free, use the software recommended in post #6

well its better than what you get with the medium broadband. how good is their security? i dont know but i have never seen anyone recomend it before.
i dont understand why they dont give the full protection to medium customers. do they want their medium customers to get a problem on their pc.

Neither to be honest. McAfee is a bigger Resource hog than WinVista and even though Virgins earlier aborted security is now outfed to Kaspersky it's not required.

    - your online banking want you to install theirs
    - your ISP want you to install theirs, very soon your 4 core with 32 GiG of memory will slow to a crawl.

The truth of the matter is that Microsoft Security Essentials is free, has a good well respected name, is small, and memory efficient and just quietly works. If I had McAfee on and I had paid for it, I'd bin it anyway. Your choice my friend.

However I would not under any circumstances put Virgin in control of my machine. Does the word ' Phorm ' ring a bell with anyone ? You should read some of these pages before you put the Virgin cuckoo in your nest:
