The head of the European parliament has summoned British Eurosceptic MEP Nigel Farage over his tirade against European Council President Herman van Rompuy.

Parliament President Jerzy Buzek is expected to reprimand Mr Farage at the meeting on Tuesday.

The UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader could face a suspension.

Mr Farage drew jeers on Wednesday when he told the chamber Mr Van Rompuy had “the charisma of a damp rag” and the appearance of a “low-grade bank clerk”.

The attack came as Mr Van Rompuy, a former Belgian prime minister, made his maiden appearance in parliament in Brussels.

Very constructive, I think I would be more interested in whether he knows what he is talking about rather than playground insults icon7.gif

  • what's taht you say? NO. Ok, we vote again.

what's that you say? NO. Ok we vote again.

What's that you say? YES. Well done, that is the correct and only answer - no votes ever again.

democracy has NO place in Europe. Its a sham.

Sorry, but you miss the point, that may have been what he was trying to get across but what actually came across was boorish, disrespectful, personal, and quite definitely counterproductive.

I don't dispute what you say, in fact I agree with your comment re free trade but not at the cost of us becoming another state with no autonomy, or say in the proceedings. That does not mean we have to sink to tthe level of a playground bully to get a point across.

unfortunately, in a union with zero democracy or respect for any differing opinions, this is the ONLY way to get your point across.

That's a pretty shameful action from Mr Farage.

Regardless of political leanings or even an individual's personality, one does not make such a derogatory comment against the EU's President.

If this was the UK/Commons, there'd be outrage if Cameron stood up and called Brown a one-eyed boring old to$$er. Brown maybe all those things BUT it is not professional nor what we expect from our elected members.

All this shows is Mr Farage's huge lack of tact and speech writing skills. A proper politician would have launched a barbed attack but made it sound silky smooth rather than just standing up and calling the President a c**t.

An unelected official deserves no more respect than a member of the Royal Family. I speak as a republican.

And I speak for what is a nice little earner for the UK i.e. The Royal family. and I don't mean that lot on the sofa although they probably bring in a few quid as wellicon7.gif

I would rather have the ones on the sofa:D

Considerably more entertainment value. And more I.Q. points per person than the Royals possess en masse. Seriously, Charlie boy's A level results: an international embarrassment.

When will the Royals learn? Interbreeding: NOT A GOOD IDEA.

Sorry, you miss the very essence of the point Farage was making. Who voted for this nonenity who calls himself the EU President - NO ONE!!!!
If that was the point he was making, I would have thought he would have had to have said just that. Instead of pointing out this problem with the office itself, he levelled a personal attack on the office holder. There was no 'very essence' in what Farage had to say, it was just a rant.

The Lisbon Treaty/EU constitution or whatever smoke and mirrors they use to disguise the variety of descriptions was turned down by three national referundum..... they persuaded Ireland to vote for it a second time to get their way (in the midst of a recession) and THEY (the unelected, unrepresentative EU council got it through). WE now have an unelected, unknown 'bank clerk' 'in charge' with a supporting cast of career eurocrats who wouldn't know a ballot paper if it slapped them in the face.

I have had enough of this barking mad organisation.......
Common free trade market YES.... Federal Europe NO
That was the point Farage was making.
Are you saying Farage says We now have an unelected, unknown 'bank clerk' 'in charge' but means Common free trade market YES.... Federal Europe NO? Either he is incoherent or incompetent. As Farage was elected and van Rompuy unelected, he has scored the magnificent own goal of showing that elections are not the be all and end of of getting good people into positions of power.

Despite the fact that his point was valid, all he did was appear like a small-minded boor. If the impression you want to create of "England" is that you are unable to present a coherent, rational argument without dropping to personal insults then, you're right, he did you proud.

Frankly, it should make you hang your head in shame.

Considering that EC Accounts have not been signed off by the auditors for many years is it surprising that no one trusts them?

I suppose this will come up tomorrow then - should be interesting. Will they be able to say more than the bumbling inarticulate Chairman managed?

Anyway, splendid stuff. 'The bland leading the bland.' :rotfl: (probably doesn't come across in the simultaneous translations though). He could probably out-debate the whole EP put together.

What Farage said about Belgium not being a country was complete rubbish.
Certainly not complete rubbish, considering for a start that a significant number in Belgium do not want it to be a country. You might be able to make an informed case that it is not really true, but it is not some wild random assertion coming from nowhere not occasioned by anything. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=30346335&postcount=106
Sorry my posts so long - not time write shorter ones.
