Charity shops

PS - is it wrong that I would wear those DMs?:rotfl:
I used to HAVE those ones! Ooh, what if they're the same pair? :rotfl:
I love having a poke about at the bric-a-brac, but clothes I don't really bother looking through anymore as I have never found any I liked or in my size. 'Normal' shops are bad enough for me finding clothes!
Car boot sales are fantastic too.0 -
They are the same pair as on the ebay link, sadly i can fit my foot in but not walk
They're a lot more softened up and a tad beaten, but thats the appeal to me.0 -
As others have said, I find Oxfam very expensive.
Clothes? Well, lots of people buy their threads in charity shops. (I was in one and caught my boss going through the clothes racks.) There are two types, though: those who look as though they've bought their clothes in a charity shop, and those who look as though they have a bespoke tailor. I like to think I am in the latter category. There are no decent clothes shops in our town, and the best clothes are in the charity shops! There is an alteration shop here, and you can have clothes adjusted for that perfect made-to-measure look.
Best find? I play chess, and I found a book with no title. It turned out to be a set of 1867 editions of a chess magazine, which were properly bound together in hardback probably at home. I read through an editorial that was written in such a bumptious style that it could only have been written by Howard Staunton. (Confirmed.) I have decided to keep it for the time being, but I doubt if anything like this comes up for auction too often. I believe there is a Howard Staunton society of some description. So I should think when I come to sell this thing, the sky is the limit. It cost £4.
I picked up a classical guitar for £3 that has such a beautiful tone that one of my offspring borrowed it off me and I have not seen it since.
Finding really good bargains in a charity shop is difficult if your town/city has a university. The students will have bought anything of any worth.
I think you are more likely to get bargains on charity stalls than in the charity shops. I still have a first US edition of For Whom the Bell Tolls which I found on a charity stall for 5p. I should think I will get three figures for that when I come to sell it.0 -
I'm a charity shop fan too - its the first port of call whenever I need anything.
The local hospice shop is a gold mine for work tops and blouses - typically £2.00 for M&S/BHS/Next and a maximum of £3.00 for Laura Ashley/Eastex. I bought a lovely Liberty fine cotton dress in shades of blue for £4 recently.
Never go in the chain charity shops locally unless they are having a sale

lauren_1 - Tragically I don't think they are the exact same pair I had, looking at the eBay link again I think they're a bit far away and maybe a size too big. It would have been so strange yet kind of lovely in a way if they could possibly have been.0

There's an excellent cs, car boot & jumble thread here

Some of the newer member may not have found it yet.

Hi all,
I have a confession, i am a charity shop addict, i have even got my boys into it.
They loves waterstones but run into charity shops as they know i'm more likely to buy a book/toy from them :rotfl:
lauren_1:- By the way had to say those purple DM's are gorgeous and i would wear them straight off!
I'm a size3 in shoes so i look in the kids bits for shoes.
I also bought a pair of red, cat, steel toe cap boots, off ebay, i swear i haven't grown up!
Over the years though the price of charity shops have gone up, especially Oxfam, they prices are extortionate .
Teesside Hospice is fantastic and they sell furniture too. My enormous, luxury fabric sofa in the the front room, was £1500 in the sale at B +S, way, way out of budget, dont even know why i looked in there. Looked in the chairty shop and found it for £150. Turned out someone had bought it, then 4 weeks later emigrated :T So was well chuffed with my find, swear its comfier than my bed.

first when you pop into a charity shop?
Do you go for the clothes racks, book section, toys, shoes, bric a brac, bags or something else?
I always go to the bric a brac first, I like to look for Pyrex bowls and kitchen stuff, normally only give clothes and shoes a quick glance as I have so many already! Only look at books when I want a particular title, rarely look at toys (no kids) and I do like to take a look at bags, but never seem to find nice ones that I like.A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -
Normally I go straight for the books, then the shoes! Have a scout round the clothes and finish with the bric-a-brac. But I'm trying not to shop at all unless I actually need something (hundreds of books in the "to-read" pile and loads of clothes etc) so I haven't been in any for a while!0

I head straight for the toys then rummage through the kids clothes. Then i just have a general look through, flicking through the kids books, dvds etc.'They only had one cow!'0
