I love Charity Shops and have found some real bargains eg M+S camel cashmere coat for £2.50 (clearly never worn), numerous 'Next' blouses and tops ranging in price between £1.50 and £3.00, and some lovely skirts and jackets, and handbags. I give plenty back to the Charity Shops as well, when I've worn and got bored of them.
I don't buy 2nd hand shoes though - really don't fancy wearing shoes that have been on someone else's sweaty feet !!

  • I love going to charity shops and car boots.
I can remember when my brother and I used to stand outside a chairty shop when mum went in refusing to go in shouting, it smells in there lol!!! She used to buy us both a sherbet dip dab to shut us up!!!
Who would have thought years later I would be doing the same thing, and yes my daughter refuses to go in, she said she would die if a friend of hers saw her in one and could I wear a paper bag over my head on entering and leaving just in case any of her friends saw me too!!!!
Anyway I have bought many good items, 2 in particular were ornaments that I collect that are rare and fetch at least £50 each, and these were £1.50 boxed mint etc
I recently went to a car boot and found a nice mirror, but the seller wanted too much so I didnt bother, although regretted it saying I shouldn't be so tight, anyway 2 days later off I am in a charity shop and yep it was there, so the seller obviously didn't sell it and took it there instead. I managed to get it for £2.50...he wanted £7!!!

I have now sold the mirror on Ebay!!! It went for....................................................£97 :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

A massive way to help pay off my card from £2.50 - £97 I am still in a state of shock!!!!!

DOes anyone ever feel a bit guilty like they should tell the charity shop the item is WAY more valuable than they r asking?
I don't mean the chanis they have a bigger network to train staff anyway, but I mean the independents, like my local one, where I have seen MOschino shoes, crocs, kids' Dior clothes, Brand new Lacroix still with labels, and so on...all at the standard set prices. I have said sometimes 'do you know how much these cost' or 'people would pay X for this...'

  • I do feel a little guity, but I honestly did not know the true value of the mirror...it was onlya resin framed mirror, and had I have known the value I would have snapped off the hands from the fellow at the car boot whom was originaly wanting £7. Saying that though all our unwanted clothes go to that shop, and they must have made a packet on them as alot have been designer labels.
Alot of Charity shops now are fully aware of true values, thats why alot of them have locked cabinets with the valuables in. I was told by one assistant that every week somebody comes in and checks their stocks to ensure the valueables are not give away prices. Many times I have seen stuff that is eiter more than the original price in the shops and about 4 times the price you can get the same goods from ebay.
O think as long as the charity shop gets what they ask for thats their main target.
  • Excuse my spelling I have a car boot to go to and in a rush lol

I popped in to our local Sue Ryder yesterday & got 4 Val McDermid books, she wrote Wire in the blood, so I won't get that much done this weekend!

OH and i had a trawl yesterday - looking for books to read, and came back with a number of barely worn outfits for our baby due in May. 2 of which were priced at 19p each and were almost brand new.

Think i will have to keep my eyes peeled now and regularly pop in for a look as kids clothes seem to go so fast.
I agree the prices differ depending on the chain of shops. We found the Brit. Heart Foundation quite expensive compared to some of the others.
    What's he building in there???
Debt at highest £30,450 (Dec 05)
    Debt at lowest £9, 113 (Jul 07)
How much did we over spend whilst on maternity leave

Since reading a thread on here months ago about charity shops I decided to go round a few to see what I was missing and have become a convert.

My "favourite" is the Barnados shop near to where I change buses on my way home from work. I bought two books both of which were on my Xmas present list last year, both in hardback and excellent condition for £1.50 each, (I know for a fact that Mr Pea would have gone into WH Smith for them and paid full jacket price) They have some lovely clothes in as new condion - per una, gap etc but I dont buy much for me because I am an awkward size and I like to try things on, however I did buy a couple of blouses for work recently which surprised me by fitting well and I have had some compliments about them, (I just smile enigmatically and say "thanks")
I spotted a navy blue PE skirt for DD1 for when she moves up to a new school in September, as new condition, for 75p, and have had some things for both DD's which are expensive names and in excellent condition. I have to be careful though - DD2 will wear anything as long as she likes it, but DD1 tends not to wear things if they have come from ebay or a charity shop even if the item is perfect and she likes it. I tend to tell her that it was a hand me down from a friend and Ive noticed she will wear it then. She is 11 and getting to be very fussy about her appearance.
