I'm currently sitting here in a a pair of Boden chairty shop jeans £3 & a Cherokee linen chairty shop shirt £2;) I actually prefer to get my jeans used from chairty shops as I have terrible terrible trouble finding new ones to fit : all either far too tight on my thighs or massively too big round my waist, used ones tend to be streatched & fit my pear shape sooo much better:D
Most of my sons clothes come from chairty shops. Last week I bought a pair of knee patches for his well-worn everyday dungarees, cost £4.20 in the habadeshery shop. Next day I went into a chairty shop selling 4 pairs of designer (Osh Kosh) dungarees in his size at £1.50 a pair:rolleyes: Madness:rolleyes:

Our local hospice sells has a bookshop in the basement. They sell paperbacks for 30p, and no book is more than £2. Our Oxfam has fixed prices. All kids clothes ar 59p all blouses, trousers, skirts and jumpers are £1.99. Suits and coats are £3.99. Every Friday they have a £1 day as well, so it's worth shoppping around.

  • It's worth remembering also that there are specialised charity shops that sell furniture and electrical goods - check your phone book for details.

I think it's great that one reader takes her son around charity shops - it will introduce him to thrift early on in life - my mother always took me to jumble sales (no charity shops in my childhood) and I learned early on that my pocket money went much further...!

Sadly though I've had to cut back on the 'chazzing' a bit - my wardrobe is full to bursting and I've no more room on the bookshelves. Even if you get five books for a pound at the charity shop, you can get five books for nothing at the library!

I agree with you about libraries being free....... until they are overdue!! I usually buy 4 for £1 at Help the Aged and take them back when I've finished. Then buy another 4. On balance it is cheaper for me and the charity benifits a little too.
  • Here where I live the charity shops are not cheap at all. We have mostly national chains and the prices are almost what you can buy new for. However, you can get lucky you just have to wander in every time you are in town. They do have offers BOGOF is the most popular. I can't get clothes either Tiff they rarely have 20-22 in stock and what they do have is quite grannyish.

Reading Lillibet's message made me think - I am sat here using the computer my DS made up for me from his old bits! wearing a monsoon top £4.50 & Next trousers £4.99 (but they were brand new) both from charity shoips. Shoes were from a Clarks sale I admit!! I tend to tell people 'I've had it for ages" if they comment upon an item.

We had a lovely higgedley piggedley Children's Society shop near here, run totally by volunteers but the dear old soles heve gone now as it has become 'branded as part of a chain & the prices have gone up big style.

I love Charity shops, but find I must limit my spends! Sometimes find myself buying things to re-sell on Ebay & then keeping them!!! I'm a big lass & can now zone in on 'plus sizes' in a shop in record time!
I also definately agree with the advice about getting to know staff & the schedule for putting new stuff out.

I also miss jumble sales.... what happened to them?
  • I've got some amazing bargains recently:

    Gap khaki skirt - £1.50
Next silk skirt (for a wedding I'm going to) - £4
    Denim jacket - £4
    Next combat trousers - £3.50
Brand new Timberland hoodie zip front sweattop - £4

I don't buy anything new anymore - I've completely revamped my wardrobe for under £50! DH can't believe the bargains!

I don't buy much in charity shops, except for books. The furniture costs a fortune, and the clothes we can get in ours are awful. I think the people who work in them take the pick of the best before putting anything out. In fact I know they do - a few years ago I took some of my stuff there when we were moving to South Africa. The next day I took some more stuff in, and one of the women was wearing a top I'd taken in the day before!

I know its not everyones cup of tea but now and again I trawl a high street near me that has 9 charity shops at the last count. Some of the prices are expensive I think, I know that they only take quality stuff these days and pass on the rest to charities abroad.

Does anyone else shop in charity shops, are there certain shops that are cheaper than the others? What have you bought and what was your best bargain?

Oh I love a good rummage!! Depends on my money situation at the time...if I want something designer, often i'll find it in a little village charity shop down the road and have learnt to go to one where this woman wears things a couple of times and puts them in the shop...ive got a pair of prada shoes and a few (well ok..a cupboard full) of designer handbags..not to mention some nice tops.
However, for the kids, and I mean like kickabout clothes, I go to the 1 in town. I love charity shops!!
