sometimes if you have a lot of moss on your roof this can end up blocking the gutter , which would then need clearing
  • Half & half...

    But as he said this:
said that moss on the roof was an indication of a leaking roof.

    stay well away.

any north facing building wall/roof etc will gather moss or lichen.
have a look at any tree. the moss only grows on the north side. useful to know if ever you are lost.

We had someone out saying the roof needed cleaning and some special paint put on the tiles. He claimed that tiles don't last very long and that as our house is about 40 years old, the tiles are worn out and past their best and really need this special paint on urgently.

I've never heard of tiles wearing out, so I told him no thanks.
Here I go again on my own....

    I've been Money Tipped!
Oh yeah? Like all those Victorian properties, up and down the country, that still have their original roofs, still in fine fettle.

Like the reclamation yard that just paid me £1 per slate for some materials off a building carrying the Crown Estate plaque dated 1904?

If this 40 years and worn out rule is true, someone with a lifetime's experience of reclaimed materials just ripped himself off, and I'm laughing all the way to the bank since I have access to several hundred more ...

I just had a cold caller come to the door from a roofing company. He was offering a moss clearance service and said that moss on the roof was an indication of a leaking roof. Our roof has never had a problem with leaks but this cold caller insisted that if it was left untreated we would require a new roof and that people up the road are already having their roofs replaced (I have not noticed anyone round here having their roofs replaced). Is there any truth in this or was he, as I suspect, talking a load of carp?
If you believe that load of rubbish then you will believe anything. Send him on his way. If someone in your street has had something done, all that proves is that they are gullible, not that there is anything wrong with their roof.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Well I did think it sounded suspect, so I thought I would check. Anyway I got a flyer off him before I sent him on his way so I could have their contact details. I have now included these details and the details of the sales pitch in a complaint to trading standards. I just have visions of them picking on some poor vulnerable type and conning them out of thousands. This kind of behaviour does not sit well with me at all!

Let me guess....this roofer had an Irish accent and was driving a transit van towing a caravan?
