Was he talking utter rubbish?

I just had a cold caller come to the door from a roofing company. He was offering a moss clearance service and said that moss on the roof was an indication of a leaking roof. Our roof has never had a problem with leaks but this cold caller insisted that if it was left untreated we would require a new roof and that people up the road are already having their roofs replaced (I have not noticed anyone round here having their roofs replaced). Is there any truth in this or was he, as I suspect, talking a load of carp?

You should have told him its an ecological way to insulate your roof ;p0

Carp up to a point. If you have tiled valleys (if for example you have an L shape to your house, the inside point of the corner will have a valley running down it - these can either be lead lined (more common) or tiled) and these get moss on them, in heavy rain water can back up behind the moss and go under the tile above and into the house interior. I know this because we had it happen.
However it is only going to be a problem in heavy rain in a valley because on normal circumstances the water flow isn't heavy enough to back up that far.
As for him charging you for removing it - when we didn't know what the problem was, we phoned a roofing company who came out, looked at it, decided it would be more hassle than it was worth raising an invoice so just cleared it while he was up the ladder taking a look. When we do need anything doing on the roof, they'll be first on the list for a call!Adventure before Dementia!0 -

No L shape in the house, just normal rectangle shaped house with pointed slate roof.0

These cowboys will probably just point a jetwash lance up your roof slope from a ladder leaning on the guttering. With the result that lots of water will get under the slates or tiles and into your loft.
Don't even consider it.
How much was he asking?
Ask him for the address of a recently treated property so you can take a look-he'll leave rapidly. No free lunch, and no free laptop
