OK from what I can tell, nobody's mentioned cars here. Soooo, here goes.

The Vauxhall VX220 is a Lotus Elise.

    Not quite.....

They were both built by Lotus on parallel production lines at Hethel. Whilst the bonded extruded aluminium chassis is similar (not identical), and the bodywork is fibreglass, I know of no two components that are shared.
    To summarise,
The VX has a Vauxhall engine/gearbox which is heavy compared to the Lotus K series or Toyota engine.
The VX has ABS which spoils the brakes for track use (crap system - better on the VXR220)
The VX has an airbag that makes the steering wheel huge.
The VX has narrow front tyres and handling tuned for understeer.

Notwithstanding the above, Vauxhall were appalled at the poor quality of the finished VX's and sent most of them back. The ended up with AA engineers at the end of the production line checking them and sending them back for rectification, so the later VX's can be great bargains now.

Tesco liquid tab laundry detergent is made by the same people that do M&S detergent. The packaging is identical aside from, of course, the label!
ALso M&S 'posh squash' is in just the same bottles as the 'posh squash' from Lidls.
On Leicester Market you can buy pies, sausage rolls etc and they are from the major retailers, but at a fraction of the cost, they are in boxes marked 'seconds' just because they have a bit of pastry knocked off. When M&S used to do the veg lattice things you could get them here for £1.
ALso there is a butchers which sells meat in the ready to roast tins sometimes. I got 5 pork joints once for £5.
When I got them home I noticed they still had labels on the bottom. M&S again.
Fantastic Food Programme on radio 4, I think it was last week, the premium brands are often nutritionally worse, and they also create an air of exclusivity by using darker colours for their packaging - black, brown and burgundy. It is a con.

Used to work for KwikSave many moons ago - the No Frills mince pies we sold by the pallet at Xmas were made by Mr Kipling, whose branded ones were 4 times the price! We were told that under no circumstances were we to tell customers - so, needless to say, we used to tell the nice ones!

Many years ago, when I worked in a clothing shop, I went to collage 1 day a week.(retail distribution) During the course we were told that in the factories there is a divertion on a conveyer belt, so that some of the products that went down this line had a specific shops label put on it. Therefore there would be no difference in the quality, So I am quite willing to buy the shops own brand and save.

Tescos own brand dishwasher tablets are exactly the same as their value brand, sorry cant remeber the tesco brand price but the value were £1.99 i think, think they were at least a pound chepaer!!

Does anyone know if Ariel say make a well known supermarket brand.

I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to washing powder-stupid really but I tend to think that Persil, Ariel, Surf and Bold are all superior to supermarket's own brand.

    Advertising works-lol!

this worries me as i try to avoid buying items from a well known swiss chocolate and coffee brand company due to my ethics and their unethical behaviour in 3rd world countries ie giving formula milk away, undermining breastfeeding in these countries, and ultimately causing babies to die either of malnutrition - watered down formula as parents unable to continue to buy as expensive, or gastroenteritis due to poor hygiene/ lack of clean water and sterilizing facilities. thus if i buy an own brand that has been made by n....e then i am contributing to their profits and condoning this practice. help!!!

would that be Lindt by any chance?

This is all very well but some things just cant be made the same eg. cheap ketchup is vile, and cheap tea bags are nasty. some things just cant be skimpt on!

I agree it's always Heinz tomato ketchup-and Betty's earl grey tea.
