Anyway, i remeber about 15 years ago I was obessed with a chicken Kiev product made by a company in Hereford called Sun Valley. At the time they made the most succulent chicken Kievs INTHE WORLD! IMO, of course.

Seriously guys - they were full of lovely garlicky butter oozing out onto my new potatoes and peas - heaven! Then something went wrong...

Sainsburys didn't stock the Sun Valley ones anymore.:exclamati

But they had a 'own brand' version, and, OMG, it was nothing as good as the SV one. It was all dry inside. And not just one of them. They were all nasty versions of the original.

I used to go to Hereford quite a lot in those days, I was HGV driver, and was shocked to hear that there had been a big fire at the SV factory, which had killed many thousands of birds and I think ruined the company. It was very sad.

But I never saw a decent chicken Kiv in the shops ever since, and I often wondered if Sainsburys got SV to make the Kiev's for them and forgoes the SV branding and make it cheap. Well, they were cheap, but they were also nasty.

I haven't had a succulent chicken Kiev ever since the late 1980s. And I don't trust own brands anymore, and taken a lot of convincing.

Sorry for the rant. It's been playing on my mind for a long time.

    Hi,
Just to let you know the fire 15+ years ago did'nt kill thousands of birds as it was in the processing area.
Sadly though some firemen lost their lives there.
I work here and have done for 17 years and believe me we are bigger than ever!
Now re- named Cargill Foods Europe.
Going back to your point a lot of our products including Kievs are now sourced to Mr M's I have some in my freezer at this very moment.

Do you still have the wee bulldozers driving around scraping up the offal and maggots for disposal? I used to watch them from up on the planets at Bulmers (S&N).

Small world I may have seen you up there!
In answer to your question it must have been a fair while ago as the old seagulls used to eat them up!

    Hi, SS
Yes the shop is still there in the same place but now just has a small sign saying 'retail shop' it's opposite the crown decorator centre.
It is now open to the public and there are nowhere near the bargains that used to be had:(
(sorry for thread diversion OP )

The seagulls were a nightmare when you are high up. And it was quite long ago.
The brother in law still works in Bulmers, his twin worked there too for a while (non identical so lots of people don't believe they are twins).

Your local butcher will not have had to pay to have their meat shipped from the abbotuire to a processing plant then onto a central distribution warehouse, then finally to the shop.
I totally agree. They’re going through this whole process of shipping goods, which add up to the overall price shouldered by consumers. Local butchers usually run their business on their own with fewer work force so prices are relatively more affordable.

Of course, other expenses like taxes also contribute to the more expensive prices charged by supermarkets.
  • total change of subject here. I was convinced earlier today when I was in Aldi that their new chocolate treats, Mysticals, were actually galaxy minstrels just in their own packaging. It was packaged like minstrels, looked like minstrels, felt like minstrels, but after finishing the entire bag I am now absolutely sure that they aren't minstrels. Wouldn't want anyone else to make the same mistake as me! Seriously - they are nowhere near as good as minstrels. Hope this helps someone.

:rotfl:Love how they 'were minstrels' until you 'finished the entire bag"...Did your taste buds fall asleep for the first section of the tasting?;)
