When you buy your'designer' fragrances over the counter, you're paying 2500% over what you should be paying  Who pays for the celebrity endorsements, glossy mag adversts, tv adverts, perfume counters etc.....................you do

What do you mean by 'designer'? The fragrances I buy are not advertised on television or, generally, in 'glossy mags'. I rarely like anything slapped with a designer name, and tend to favour scents from specialist retailers who only concentrate on one product. That's just my preference and there's nothing wrong with liking Prada or Britney perfumes, but please don't assume I'm some kind of label !!!!! because I refuted something written with very little insight into the industry with another point of view

I appreciate that most mass-market fragrances are marked up over cost of ingredients - surely this is not news to anyone - but that cost goes toward marketing, just as it does with beans, or trainers. Celebrity endorsements cost, which is why Gillette blades cost more than their own-brand equivalent, and on top of that may possibly be the best quality, but just as likely not. FYI Nike spend more on advertising than on actually producing their product, but I'd still never wear anything with their logo on. 'What you should be paying' is meaningless when it comes to branded goods - part of the reason for the prices being set as they are is because, for various reasons, people are willing to pay more for a name.

(On a personal note, I tend to find most celebrity-endorsed perfumes really boring, as they're designed to appeal to as many people as possible to maximise sales, and so tend to be really, really generic. Don't see the point on spending money on what is, essentially, a frivolous item, to smell like everyone else!)

Slighty off track - but related to supermarkets and location ofproducts.

Generally the expensive brands / branded products are at eye level as they want their products to be seen 1st, the cheaper value, aim more at the bottom shelves so people don't have to bend down.

Certain companies - will employ mystery shop companies - to go and see that their products are located in the correct places, some of this visits the "person" will do them as a proper visit, - ie speak to manager, have id badge, other ocassions they go in as a customer and are expected to take photographs of a certain product and the area surrounding it on a mobile phone (so it looks like their texting.

the first bit ive already mentioned about the position,

the last paragraph didnt happen in the stores ive worked in, yes they may have come in as normal shoppers but never with ID on them, spoke to the store manager, yes we had mystery shoppers but they were from a firm who did mystery shops and they're contract wasnt for 1 product but for a selection eg the ones listed in the grocer

this is all amazing stuff! it is just like paying £4-5 for nurofen instead of 70p for ibuprofen. People buy it fot the fancy packaging and the flash TV ads!

I have started getting all of my home mediactaions online from Chemist Direct, Pharmacy First and Pharmacy2u for this exact reason. They sell "generic" versions at a far lower price to avoid paying for the branding and fnacy boxes!

I saw an experiment done on the TV with pain killers.
It was a blind tasting in that the brands and the tablets had been mixed up.
Advertising does work; the punters regularly reported that the branded pain killer worked better than the generic version, even when the tablets had been switched.
So put the generic product in the fancy branded packaging and it will become more effective.

Humm......don't know if this is quite what is wanted but I have a family member who used to work for Tricity-Bendix as a washing machine engineer & he knew for a fact that the internal parts/motors/etc of all Tricity-Bendix products (ovens, washing machines, tumble dryers etc) were made by Zanussi. Zanussi brand appliances retail for almost twice the price of Tricity-Bendix but the only difference was the external housing of the product. Beware, this might have changed as he hasn't worked for them for a couple of years though.

It has changed as tricity bendix is no longer produced x and zanussi only makes parts for that brand ( works for them now ) :A:A:A

I used to work for a company that produced J Cloths and Nappy Liners - the quality did vary depending on the store they were supplying. What you pay for, is what you get in this case ..... like many others, this was a few years ago though.
    Regards

Tefal make pans for everyone but the quality is usually way below the real Tefal ones and Tefal themselves have 5 quality ranges. Buy one in Asda and it won't last but it is only £5 or £10. Buy a real one and it will. Trade off between quality and price as always but look out for the real mid range ones, such as they make for John Lewis, which are often discounted elsewhere.
  • If you go into Dunelm Mill they often have end of line M&S stuff for a fraction of the price! I've bought kids puzzles in there for £2 which are usually £5 in M&S at christmas. I've also bought loadsa b'day cards & wrapping paper/gift bags which are M&S but only cost from 49p. They sometimes have end of line M&S packs of invitations in there too which are usually £1.49 instead of £3.50 in M&S. They just stick a sticker over the M&S branding on the pack but inside the cards remain M&S branded!
  • LG make the screens and internal parts for all Sony TV's Sony just make the surround.

So if you fork out more for a sony TV you are really just buying an LG, which are cheaper in the first place.

My Oh works with Sony and found this out last week.

Whoever told your OH that was winding them up.

The panels for Sony Bravia TVs are made by S-LCD, a joint venture between Sony and Samsung.

The next generation (10th gen) screens will be made by a Sony/Sharp partnership. The electronics also have many Sony specific features (Bravia engine, motionflow etc) that you certainly won't find on any LG.

I'm not even a Sony fanboy (apart from the PS3), but I couldn't let that one go!

LG and Sony tellies may be asembled in same place but it doesn't mean an LG is identical to Sony.
Some components may be common, other components will not.
You're not going to get Sony's BRAVIA Engine Full Digital Video Processor in a LG telly.
