I had probs. with a Linskys which I bought about 6 months back (Advanced Technothicky I'm afraid). I found the instructions to be not quite "user-friendly" enough but included in the kit was an 24 hour 0800 helpline. It sounded like a sub continent call centre but the guy was sh*t-h*t and within 10 mins I was up and running. He gave me a registration number which I was to quote if ever I needed any future assistance.
Was there no reference to a freebie helpline in the kit that is currently causing probs. or have they stopped this service now ?

Does a direct connection with the cable modem still work.

Does a direct connection PC - Router - Cable modem work.

The wireless issue is an extra point of possible failure, I'd try getting it working wired first.

You probably need to do an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew each time you pull the leads out to test.

All I know is its showing linksys on the other girls laptop.

How would she try to get it working wired? shes tried but she might be doing it wrong it just says cannot connect to the internet it must be something to do with the modem because it says switch of modem and restart nothing abbout the router
    Thanx

It is all explained in the full User Guide which includes a troubleshooting section. Find out which version you have, as there are several versions and download the relevant User Guide from here.

First of all plug it back into the cable modem, do an ipconfig /release and renew, check to see if internet is working.

Then plug PC - router - modem, and do the same.

    try start run cmd

    ping https://www.google.com and ping 66.249.91.104

If it worked at stage one, and not 2, then either a configuration issue is to blame, or the mac address of the router needs registering with NTL (Not sure if you need to do this, maybe an NTL user with router may be able to advise).

Forget about wireless for now, it just makes diagnosis harder.

Just helped my friend to go on the net with his WRT54GS-V5 over the phone. Basically, I asked him to do the following:

    1) Turn off everything
    2) Disconnect the ethernet cable from the cable modem to the PC
    3) Connect the blue ethernet cable from the cable modem to the the Internet port of the router.
    4) Connect the existing ethernet cable from PC to LAN port No 1.
    5) Turn on the cable modem, wait for a minute or two
    6) Turn on the router, wait a minute or two
    7) Turn on the PC

Off you go .. you should be able to connect to the Internet...!!

v5 stands for version 5, which uses different firmware but have the same WEB GUI interface as previous versions .. but it shouldn't be a matter. Yes, my friend is on NTL too (and I'm on NTL too with the exact same router as what you have). Well, the above should work if your notebook is directly connected to the router via ethernet cable. Before going for the wireless setup, make sure that you've the wired part working first. Ditch the setup CD-ROM, it gives more troubles instead of helping you to get started.

shes on the internet wired up but not sure if it works wirelessly or not yet.

shes been trying it all day and now shes had enough and i think shes scared if she discoinnects it she wont get back on again. she doesnt know if it can be used by anyone or not but if she switches it off at the electroiic plug socket when its off does that mean they cant use it?
    Thanx
