Is it worth getting water meter

Options
I live in a 1 bed flat and was wondering if it would be worth getting a meter or assessed rate. Last year my bill was £289 all included, Thames Water are my provider. what is the general consensus?

How many of you in the flat? Rough and ready calc is that if more bedrooms than people, it is worth it. Try one of the comparison sites to get a better idea.
You can't get put on an assessed rate unless you have already applied for a meter and it cannot be fitted.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I live alone. Surely there must be a saving on £288 per year, anyway I have applied for it via the Thames Water site. The only thing that puts me off the meter is that I have read it might devalue one's property.

Remember you can revert to rated value payment as long as you do it within 12m of the installation. Subsequent owners must be metered.

  • Thanks macman
  • I received my usual annual unmetered water bill in the post today from Thames Water. I paid this online after talking to a lady from Thames Water who said that once a water meter had been installed and they had created another account for me the credit would be moved to the new account.
  • am a single Guy living in a 2 Bedroom Flat in South UK. My Water Supplier is Portsmouth Water and my waste water is Southern Water. I had a meter installed about 20 months ago and to show you the difference. I was on what was called a Flat Licence as my home had no rateable value and the costs at the moment are:

Water: £99 per year Licence Charge
    Sewage: £307.96

I have just had my half yearly bills for both and they were:

Water: £33.66 or for a full year est £67.32
Sewage: £74.81 or for a full year est £149.62

Saving on Water: £31.68 per year
    Saving on Sewage: £158.34

    Combined Saving: £190.02

So yeah it has so far worked out OK for me

    Peace

I am puzzled by the sewage charge being so high. I thought that sewage charges were based on "what goes out depends on what comes in".

I also live in the South and pay by meter; 84p per cubic metre for water, but only 55p per cubic metre for sewage. This works out at about £220 per annum for two people in a 4 bedroom house.

I enquired recently about having my 1st meter installed and water co can only offer an indoor meter that requires someone at home for readings - due to a shared outdoor stopcock.

Not keen - this is 2010 after all and I was almost expecting by now smart electronic metering or something.

Will my refusal to accept this prevent me from getting a reduction on the current £400 for a normal semi / 2 occupants?

The price of Waste Water disposal is considerably more per cubic meter than the fresh water coming in. Plus the Waste water bill includes Highway Drainaige and Surface Water Drainage charges which are not metered just flat fees added to the bill.

I am with The Portsmouth & Gosport Water Co. for Fresh Water and Southern Water for Waste Water.
