How can you get jelly from arrowroot? Surely arrowroot is a thickener rather than a gelling agent isn't it? Would it actually set?

Wouldn't you be better off buying some gelatine (supercook or leaf) and mixing that in with the juice from the peaches? I've done that many a time and oft and it works fine. Arrowroot I generally use in eg blackberry and apple - you know if you cook foraged blackberries you effectively end up with blackberries in blackberry water, and adding sugar and arrowroot makes it much more pie-filling-y.

Let us know if it does set effectively - I'm really interested!:D

ETA - sorry angelatgraceland, I should have been quoting Moniker on this as you were replying to her quote as well! D'oh!

my memory is this was about veggi jelly for trifle initally, so the gelatine would not work. some suggested arrowroot it think, agar agar is a gelling agent so you can get veggi jelly, some posters have said the crystal jellies are veggie, so that might be a possibility. sorry if i'm sticking my nose in the wrong place :)

Having a friend round for dinner on Saturday, and I was thinking of making some kind of lamb stew. Trouble is, I've never cooked any kind of lamb before. It's not that I don't like it, I've just never really eaten it unless someone else has cooked.

So, I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction of a tried & tested recipe. I've looked some up on t'internet, but to be honest, I'd rather go by one that someone I know recommends. Well, obviously I don't know you all, but you know what I mean!!

No worries! My DH won't eat anything with gelatine and we do use the veggy alternative now and then so I'm interested in the arrowroot. I did read a recipe somewhere in one of my "books"(rarely open them now Im on forums)but Ive not got the willpower to look it up! Yes-it is a thickener but quite versatile I believe.
Today is a nsd day I'm pleased to say-I may buy a few bits tomorrow but I mmust be good and take our lunches to work! That is where the saving is made. I went back to the gym today after 6 months away from it and promising myself I would walk places which I didn't seem to do ;+) anyway Im feeling pleased because Ive not slipped far behind from what I was able to achieve previously. I resisted the drinks machine at £1.50 per bottle and made do with water from the fountain-I will be very organised when I next go there on Saturday so I was pleased about that too. Not counting the price of Gym as its on direct debit and isn't grocery.
I also liked earthmothers method of making her money last over the next two weeks-so simple-basically what I often do but explained so so simply!(I tend to waffle on)
Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults

Oh, I missed that bit! Thanks - yes, fair enough, it makes sense now!

  • Woohoo, NSD on wednesday. Another one in the bank! Kind of ruined it yesterday by going out for dinner with one of the girlies though! It's my birthday this weekend as well, so I think it's going to be an expensive weekend! NSD's predicted, 0!
