I saw a really great donut cake in an episode of Brothers and sisters - it was basically a 3x3 grid of dounuts piled up, and then the top layer had two layers of four donuts, with candles on top. It looked really cool, with different coloured icings, and then everyone just took a donut when the candles went out!

I was inspired to have a go at this baking. sampling the products was the fun part. hope it survives the journey to the party tonight

Not sure if its been mentioned but what do the sweets attach to ? Do I buy a very small sponge cake and stick sweets in it ? Or is there another way...........;)

I used a glass pyrex dish. I put veg oil all over the inside and put it in the freezer for an hour before putting the choc in - then put it back in the freezer for an hour. This is the only way I found it would come out. I didn't try a plastic bowl. it might work because you could squeeze the bowl to try and get choc out but it might crack easier??

i made one of these for dh's birthday the other week

all i did was cut a large circle of polystyrene then a smaller circle, stuck the small one on top of the large one and covered them with foil.

i then used cocktail sticks to do a ring of those large marshmallows up against the smaller ring, strip candy for the edges then got all ancy fancy with other sweets and more marshmallows then filled the middle with midget gems

hope that makes sense lol but i was really pleased with it and so was dh. - in fact ds has now requested one for his birthday

Thanks for this tip, I was wondering how to go about doing this and now I have an idea. Going to attemp one for DD'd 3rd birthday, just wondering tho if anyone has any other ideas for skewers other than cocktail sticks?
Do you think those candy sticks might hold without breaking? Although this will be placed at the far back of the food table, away from the children im still a litttle cautious :o
    TIA for any ideas :-)

can see why u would be cautious with the kids as the cocktail sticks did get stuck into the marshmallow.

just a thought could u use icicng like glue and stick them in a circle? might be worth a try,
