I think I read that it tends to be the enzymes in biological washing powder that irritates the skin or sets of allergies - personally I can only use non-bio (any brand, but non-bio) and I find that liquid is better than powder.

In my case, it was just trial and error but I agree with other posts to steer clear of cheap stuff.

  • I feel for you I really do. I can only use blue bold. At the beginning of this year I tried green bold and came out in huge rash! On the box there is nothing different in the ingredients so I wrote to them asking what was different in their green powder to their blue one. Not a helpful respons. Its the 'parfum' (obviously) but as its just listed as 'parfum' on every box who the hell knows what it is?? Allergy test at the hospital came up with one or two compounds to avoid but the box never has enough info on it.

One thing I will say though is that recently I tried fairy as its supposed to be kind to babies skin and as I am very heavily rpegnant and didn't want to be washing things in 2 different powders i thought i would give it a go. Its supposed to be kind to skin etc so you might be OK with it if they are endorsing it for babies. I was OK with it but i found i didn't like the smell much so have gone back to blue bold. Hope they never discontinue it or I will have to smell!!!

Trouble is fairy is as expensive as bold. I have to be honest and say that the cheaper powders seem to be the worst offenders.

Have you got a mackro near you? Or a wholesalers?? Sometimes you can get surf in a huge massive box from there.

I'd say if you find he can only use Surf I'd start off washing baby's stuff with it too, only if there's problems using a separate non bio.

    Good luck ![/quote]

My DS1 had eczema as a tiny baby and it was horrendous - constantly crying and waking up with the itching. So I wouldn't personally take the risk with the baby's clothes - I'd use non bio from the outset as their skin is so sensitive (and as your partner is prone to eczema your baby might be more likely to be prone to it as well). Plus not washing the baby very often - I think we made matters worse with DS1 by thinking he "had" to have a bath every day....DS2 didn't have one till he was a month old, and then only had them about once a week, and he didn't get dirty! And he only ever got a tiny bit of eczema.

Good luck with finding a solution that works for everyone in the family!

Have you tried using Napisan? It's the nappy soak powder - I use it in my wash just a dessert spoonful in each wash. I'm an atopic nightmare and it hasn't affected my skin at all, I use it with a non bio store powder.. i always put in less than it recommends and we are in a hard water area...
  • I've been using A well known brand of soap powder for the first time and i swear i've never had so many spots..... i suffer with a bit of eczema on my hands but its made that flare up aswell...... and i bought loads of it from Tesco when it was half price.....not happy
  • Soap Nuts or the plastic ball - heaven I can tell you when you have sensitive skin!
  • Hi there

Im getting started on a plan for next months menus and shopping. First timer here, so bear with me!

Any ideas on getting fairy liquid soap powder or pure comfort cheaper? My son has excema and Ive tried other makes with no success so far - but these are costing me £20 a month at least!

Also - can anyone suggest fresh 100% juice in small cartons? My son drinks a couple a day and they are 61p for three, so again, they are costing towards £10 a month on their own!

    thanks for any ideas!

  • Have you considered soap nuts to wash and white vinegar as a softener?

They're about as hypo-allergenic as you can get. Soap nuts can be reused up to 5 times I believe, so they're worth the initial outlay (I'm told they bring whites up beautifully). You won't get any nice pong like you do with commercial washing powders though, but they're kinder to sensitive skin. HTH

How about trying a natural soap powder/liquid that's chemical free? Personally I love Earth Friendly Ecos washing liquid, it seems more expensive at £6.25 for 1.5 ltr but it's concentrated so you only use a small amount and you get 50 washes per bottle, (and it has a built in fabric softener). It works out at 14p per wash, there's 3 of us and a bottle easily lasts me about 2 months. Bio-D is a bit cheaper but doesn't have the fabric softener built in so by the time you've bought that it works out about the same. I bought Bio-D to try this time but I'm definately going back to the Earth Friendly, I didn't think the Bio-D cleans as well and I'm not keen on the smell.
