I honestly never knew that. Any car I've had with discs and pads at the rear also had shoes inside the discs. held by the handbrake cable for a mechanical form of braking.0 -

mercs by any chance?...work permit granted!0 -
During these very cold spells, if your car is parked on flat ground, keep it in gear, however do not put on the hand-brake.
The cold temperatures are freezing the brake-pads into the wheels, therefore it is a better idea to leave the hand-brake off if possible.
A very small tip and hopefully some will find it useful.
A good tip Shaz, my car got stuck in the snow so I had to use my lads for work, his handbrake stuck on and it was tricky freeing it off in the slippery conditions. Tried to remember not to pull the handbrake on but didn't always remember0 -

I have looked at all of those and can't find anything.
It is the offence of 'quitting'.
Quitting is dealt with by Regulation 107(1) of The Road Vehicles (Constriction and Use) Regulation 1986. Amended in 1998.
Inactive openly sneers at those who research facts and this attitude is often reflected by the inaccuracies contained in his posts.
However to his credit he does appears to have made a half hearted attempt in this example.0 -

I think Mike is being pedantic. Most Mercs have a foot operated parking brake. (insert rolleyes)The man without a signature.0 -
The frozen bit of a handbrake is just as likely to be the cable as the actual pads/shoes. So if it's stuck, and you haven't pulled the handbrake up to a stupid angle, you may be able to free it off by pulling UP on the handbrake, thus breaking the ice on the cable.
A warning if you've just got pads/discs as some cars do, if you have warmed up the brakes a fair bit, then pulled the handbrake on not too tightly, the disc will shrink as it cools away from the pads, and the brakes cease to work, followed by you rolling into the car behind. I used to work in a department store with a car park that was on a bit of a slope (High Wycombe - everywhere is hilly!) just about every week or so one car would slide gently back into the car behind. Leave it in gear.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0 -
