Small Tip

During these very cold spells, if your car is parked on flat ground, keep it in gear, however do not put on the hand-brake.

The cold temperatures are freezing the brake-pads into the wheels, therefore it is a better idea to leave the hand-brake off if possible.

A very small tip and hopefully some will find it useful.

If the brakes are stuck on I just drive off hard to free them.

Personal experience, I still sometimes leave the hand-brake on its a force of habit, I had to drive hard one morning last week to free up the brake.

Like everything else use it if you want.

What is wrong with it as a tip?

I never park with the handbrake on anyway.
  • I find the best way is to handbrake turn into any given space, thus ensuring plenty of heat is in the pads and disc expelling any water and thus removing the problem.

On a serious note i always leave my car in gear but i've never heard of pads freezing on. Sometimes after a while e.g. been left whilst on holiday i've known them to get a bit of surface rust/corrosion which seems to cause it stick. Nothing a full bore start can't cure tho!

What is advising people to break which law?

My car is secured by the gearbox and is lot safer than some of the handbrakes nowdays that can fail after the duiscs have cooled down.
