If the port is there but doesn't recognise when a cable is plugged in there are two free options to check first..

    1. Is the ethernet activated in the BIOS

    2. Are the drivers OK

Do you know how to do either of these? Meantime, I'll have a look too
No, I don't know how to do this I'm afraid.
  • Thanks for the replies. I'll keep on trying.

If you open "control panel" and "network connections" how many connections do you see?

if there is one labelled along the lines of "local area connection" right click and see if there is an option to "enable" it.

to check its enabled in BIOS you need to access the BIOS setup menu which involves pressing 'del' or an F key when your machine is booting up. hunt around in there for a LAN/ethernet adapter Enable or Disable toggle switch.

if with help on here you really can't get it to work one of the following would do you:

    basic £2.99 option

does not come with the fastest 1GB/s networking around but its certainly faster than your internet connection.

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/83820
at £12 this one gives you wired 1GB/s networking speeds

alternatively you could go wireless with
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132449
for a £9 cheap and cheerful wireless G card (will slow down a wireless N network if everything else is wireless N only)

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166269
£32 gets you a shiny wireless N dual band PCI card (you might find a single band one for around £20)

check you have a spare PCI slot free, the dual band wireless N ones are h0pefully on the way down in price if you don;t buy immediately (and might step up to faster PCIe soon with any luck too :p)
  • Hi, is the router connected to the ADSL point on your phone line, and when you plug in the ethernet cable to the desktop is there a light near the cable on the desktop. oh btw what is the desktop make.model?

Look in Device Manager-what does it say against network devices? Right click on the NIC entry and try 'enable this device' if it's not enabled.
I wouldn't assume the card has physically failed until you have checked the drivers are installed and that it's enabled.
If it is card failure, they cost a fiver and can be fitted in 10 minutes-very easy to do on a Dell Dimension.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I have looked in Device Manager and what I have is

    Speed Touch USB and
Intel( R )Pro 100 VE Network Connection.

    Can't see NIC anywhere.

Intel Pro 100 VE is the network interface card (NIC) - make sure it is enabled and update the drivers

  • Thank you Jasx. I am taking your advice.

I'm back - go here (http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=GuidedPathHomePage) and follow the instructions. You are looking for the network card or NIC drivers
