cleanup your drive, or buy a bigger internal one(£30), and image the drive to the new one, then swap, keep the old drive safe, or in a caddy.

80GB is a lot of data (is it one partition), unless you have video on there, there's bound to be some space you can cleanup, try ccleaner and windirstat for starters.

Make DVD copies (clean finalised DVD-Rs cant get infected, HD's can), and retain multiple HD copies for security. 2 copies is a minimum for important memories.

Filter out the best photos and get them printed and placed into albums.

If you backup on to DVD then make two copies, 1 copy kept at someones else's house locked away and a copy where you live just in case something gets deleted.

Technology moves on and in a few years time you may be backing it all up again as your old ones are obsolete. Who remembers backing up to floppies then to tape........?
  • I personally would buy another internal hard drive, you can usually pick up a cheap one for less than £20 for the size you need (just bought another one for myself 40gb tested from a computer fair for £5!!!). They really are easy to fit and are most unlikely to go wrong.
Old Faithful we roam the range together,
Old Faithful in any kind of weather,
When the round up days are over,
And the Boulevard’s white with clover,
For you old faithful pal of mine.

A 40GB hard drive probably originally saw service on Noah's Arc - I wouldn't be relying on a secondhand antique when new drives cost so little.

You could always buy a Blu-Ray burner and get some 50gig discs and copy to them. That is what i do.:D

Is this totally free? Who pays for the service provided by this co? Is it adverts?

    Thanks for the link.

1, Good idea re drive, except I am thinking of renewing my old PC this year. I am unsure how to 'image' data to new drive though.

2 , Yes, all in one partition. I would not have a clue how to divide drive! I have done a clean of my drive. Managed to go from 1.40GB to 6.4GB after deleting lots of rubbish (old progs' that I no longer use etc)

3, I have set myself a task this week of copying to DVD's.

    Many thanks for advice.

1 We have a loft and tops of wardrobes full of photo albums! Suitcases full of boxes of slides! I can hear her now, " If you don't do something about all those photos and slides, I will!" Mind you, she has been saying that for years! Then it's, "Nobody will want to look at those or sort them when we are dead!"
I keep promising to sort/dump but never get around to it:D

Thanks for tip on backing up to DVD.
