After all the discussions from when the weather was really bad last january your employer could:
    a) take the view that if it had been possible, you would''ve made it in and thus pay you as if you had attended
    b) not pay you as you didn't work the hours
    c) give you the option of taking annual leave for your missed day

Which they do generally will depend on the company policy - which if they didn't have before last January, I bet they have now :p

You did the right thing in calling them as soon as you could and explaining the situation

just out of interest it has caused a surprise round here, too - snow was expected for next week, not overnight. In Sheffield, a major, but hilly city close by, there have been numerous accidents and road closures and various routes along which buses aren't running. One accident covered on local radio was caused when cars were stopped on a hill, the brakes wouldn't hold and they have all slid down and into each other...
My car would not have made the journey had I been due at work this morning - I have already abandoned it once this winter. And, like the OP says, not many people are going to venture out to electrical retailers in this anyway. Chances are he won't be paid for this missed shift anyway.
    Nice pictures BTW.

Wow such a lot of snow!

From an employers perspective you'll need to accept they pay you to be at work regardless of the weather. Sorry. As other posters have suggested making every effort to get in is important however sometimes this is impossible.

If I were you I'd check with your employer what options you have. Your employer pretty much can do what they like, treat you as 'unauthorised absence' if they wish, however this isn't logical and as you work for what sounds like a large company they'll have a sensible approach to weather related problems which no doubt are affected plenty of people.

Options might include taking holiday, unpaid leave or making up the time. Just remember they don't 'have' to offer any of this, but hopefully they will be reasonable.

I personally will be allowing time to be made up, or if this doesn't suit then taking holiday. If the member of staff wants it unpaid then I'll allow it but appreciate this won't suit many - I certainly couldn't afford to lose a days pay!

Good Luck, hope the snow clears so life can return to normality.

Ps . if your stuck for a while I urge you to get in touch with your manager just to make sure they are kept up to date, send the pictures if you have to!!
  • Yeah the council werent prepared at all, snowed in at my girlfriends now though, got the logfire going! :)

    Brisk walk in icy conditions?

Even without Ice it will be hard going through a foot of snow, wellies or not. Then you could end up with the flu, hypothermia etc...

Is that old wives tale still going? ;) You do not get the flu going out for a walk in icy conditions, just like you wont catch a cold going out with wet hair, or no coat on :D Although hypothermia is a possibility looking at the amount of snow in those pictures :rotfl:

Very picturesque. If you end up in a disciplinary for being 'awol', then I suggest you use alot of what you've told us in your defence. It will be important to acknowledge that you are paid to be at work, however in mitigation for such an extrodinary event (although snow is becoming more frequent so don't rely on that) that you were unprepared, you tried to get in to work but it was impossible, an existing injury meant that walking so far wasn't an option, if your girlf's house is closer to work then your house then mention you were trying - if its not don't mention it!, etc. Hopefully you have a reasonable employer who will have decided on what to do in this situation and have the same options available to all staff who were unable to get in.
  • Yeah, they shut the shop early last time it snowed.
Also, quite a few people seemed not to have made it in according to my manager!
