Snow Day - Rules & Regs?

So, I haven't been able to make it into work today due to the snow, was supposed to be working a 12-5 shift.
Stayed my girlfriends house last night who lives about 4/5 miles away from where I work, easily accessible to work via bus, lift or taxi.
This morning woke up to about a foot of snow, apparently the whole city is bad.
The cars in street cant even move, the bus service has been cancelled and there are non running.
Anyway, can work call you up or have a go at you for not being able to make it in?
If it makes any difference, I work in a well known electricals store, which will probably be quiet today anyway now.

Last time there was bad snow I got a phone call from work asking if I'd be able to make it (or they'd send a car for me)
So while they shouldn't really have a go at you (as you did ring) they don't have to pay you (or could make you take annual leave)
However if I was 4 or 5 miles away from work and had a 12 hour shift I'd ring them and say I can only get it by walking and it would take a lot longer than normal so would be late (part of me would hope they'd say no, don't bother but thanks for offering) but I would go in0 -
A 4 mile brisk walk wouldn't take much more than an hour.
Just ring them and tell them it's a little unexpected, sorry that you didn't read the countless weather forecasts, or get up early in preparation, and that you'll be walking.
Get some wellies, and enjoy the snow.0 -
Try to attend safely, making use of alternative transport wherever possible...if all else fails, call them in good time to explain that you'll be late, or won't be attending.
Don't "no show". Many employers take a dim view of that, snow or not.
Looks like you've already called them and covered your back. They may not "have a go", but may ask why you didn't walk instead
£1 / 50p 2011 holiday flight + hotel expenses = £98.50/£600
HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500
"3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600 :eek:0 -

They can't make you take holiday, they should give you the option of unpaid leave or taking a days holiday.Always ask ACAS0 -

No, this wasn't forecast and our city council are crap.
No roads were gritted, and there was not a weather warning in place.
For next week yes, for yesterday, no. On BBC Weather it even said that it was to be a "clear night".
Also, walking involves walking through one of the roughest areas in the city, where people are attacked daily when I would have finish this evening...
Thanks everybody else for the advice!0 -

Brisk walk in icy conditions?
Even without Ice it will be hard going through a foot of snow, wellies or not. Then you could end up with the flu, hypothermia etc...[strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!0 -

Uh huh.
What about a taxi?
Just admit your too lazy to even make an effort when faced with minor snowfall and accept you wont get paid for today.
Should count yourself lucky if its not a discliplinary.
I'll bet everyone else made it in.0 -

its 4.9 miles from my house to work- i walked it in 10 inches of snow in just over an hour along country roads
i do think you should have offered to come in anyway- they probably would have said no but would have appreciated the offer and your eagerness to get in and do your shift.2011- new year, new start.
