Gas & Electric Tarrifs
Options
I am really confused with all the tarrifs available.
I am currently on Brit Gas dual fuel essentials tarrif. I live in the SHEB charging area.
I have tried to find out whether I would be better switching, but unfortunately this tarrif is not listed on comparison sites.
My anual consumption is 4,745 & 5,110 kWh/year for gas and electricity respectively. The rate is 4.511 & 14.602/kWh for gas and electricity respectively.
From my calculations using my consumption and BG tarrifs:
BG Essentials = £214 & £746 / year for gas and electric
BG Web Saver 6 = £225.19 & £525.70 for gas and electric
Thus, it would appear that I would be cheaper switching?
I would appreciate if you could check my figures and advise :T

Assuming you mean Scottish Hydro area cheapest is EDF = Online S@aver Dual Fuel
on Monthly DD £660.86,
paying on receipt of bill £703.58- Early termination fee of £50
- A minimum 2% discount off Standard prices guaranteed until the end of December 2010.

Essentials is still a two tier tariff. You are greatly overestimating the cost (especially of your electricity - your gas may be about right). Contact British Gas to find out what the tier 2 unit prices and tier caps are.0

Many thanks for your comments guys. Please be advised:
There appears to be a three tier essentials rate tariff, but BG do not publish same on their web site. I am not sure how best to calculate for comparison? Please see attached as copied from my last satements >
Gas units converted = 1135.53 kWh used over 78 daysFirst 573.00 kWh x 4.511p = £25.85Total cost of gas used £48.41
Next 404.00 kWh x 4.511p = £18.22
Third null kWh x nullp = £4.34
Electricity you've used this period = 1097 metric units over 77 days (actual)
First 105 kWh x 14.602p = £15.33Total cost of electricity used £106.97
Next 85 kWh x 14.602p = £12.41
Third null kWh x nullp = £79.23,
BG do not state on their bill, rate charged for third null kWh
However, it would seem to be charged @ 2.737 & 8.735p / kWh for gas and electricity respectively.
I have asked BG to advise if I would be better on a.n.other tariff, but all I got was a standard response assuring me that essentials was guaranteed to be less than their lowest standard rate for gas and electricity.

Not the best answer really considering their standard rate is one of the most expensive.
Thats like someone in Waitrose saying their prices are guaranteed to be lower than Harrods.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
WARNING
Bgas (and others) do a "price fix till......XXXX" which sounds an option
So i took it 2 years ago
After a year or so i looked at the bills and my rate had gone up, so i rang em
Oh yes sir, the fixed rate was higher than the rate you were on so it went up...
CROOKS!

Which tariff was that?
A fixed rate tariff should remail the same Unit rates until the end of the term. If your prices went up you would have a case for mis-selling.
Edit: Or do you mean that the fixed rate was higher than the non fixed rate you were on previously? If so thats normally the case, did you not check the rates you were signing up to?Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -

[blah...blah...blah]
So you chose to change to a more expensive fixed tariff from the variable tariff that you were on. And somehow that is the fault of British Gas?0 -

What are you using for heating, hot water and cooking?
We use gas for central heating and hot water, electricity for cooking and lighting. We have halogen downlighters throughout which are 50w each "A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

These are often at Lidl at around £4, and always at Wilkinsons for around £50
