Laptop still playing up alot. I ran a full malwarebytes scan in safemode with networking but it wouldn't let me update first (got an error code).
I also checked the hard disk for errors by doing the following:
computer/right click on c: drive/properties/tools/error checking/click now
unticked the 'automatically fix file.....' and 'scan for and attempt recovery...' boxes as I wasn't sure about these.
It came up with the results after a while and did mention that something wasn't working properly but I was unable to copy and paste this to put on here and have forgotten what it said now ........... oops:(
Can someone advise what I need to do please:)
I've also noticed a drop down box on the bottom bar of this page saying 'no items are being blocked on this page' and giving me options of:
automatically block
choose contents to block
off
settings.
Should this be set at automatically block?

Try again but this time leave the boxes ticked. If the program finds a problem (bad sector for example) it will then try to move the data from the bad part of the disk to a good part.
This is also an indication the hard disk is failing so please back it all up as soon as you can.
The other part of your question sounds like it may have something to do with an ad blocker, but before we worry about this let's make sure your hard disk is ok.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0 -
Hi
Run check disk again with both boxes checked. It should repair any disk errors. (Might take a while though. Could run it over night)
Dunno about the blocking-Is it the firewall, Firefox Adblock?

Thank you both for your prompt answers - MUCH APPRECIATED:T

.
My intention was to back-up photos, music and documents to an external hard drive today (first time so abit unsure) which is why I'd got the laptop on but it was playing up again.
When you say 'back it all up' do you mean I have to do the whole drive? And if so, how. (I have tried finding out this week and looked at the backing-up sticky etc. but still unsure).
I also need to ring PC World to try and get it booked in as the 12 month guarantee runs out this week.:eek:0 -
By "back it all up" I actually meant all the photos, documents, music and files that would be lost if you had to start afresh.
It's worth backing up first; just copy all the files you need to your external drive. At least then you will know they are safe and should anything further go wrong with the laptop you will have minimized any data loss.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0 -
Thanks taffy, I'll do that now.
I have actually got most of them backed up already on dvd's and usb flash drives, so I'm not a complete numpty:rotfl:
Incidentally do I need to post the results of the check disk on here, and if so, how do I copy and paste the results? Thanks.0 -

GRB.
It's windows firewall. I had to fix some things on Norton earlier, so it could be that, I suppose.0 -
No need. Checkdisk will either sort out any problems automatically, or it won't. If it can't there will not be much anyone can do about it, except replace the drive. The fact that you have this issue would spur me to request a new drive from PCW anyway. Thanks taffy, I'll do that now.

Back up. Checkdisk can trash your disk if you are unlucky. Had to spend ages recovering data that checkdisk had deleted automatically once...[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0 -

If it still behaves the way it used to, chkdsk does sometimes find files (or parts of files) that it can't recover in a way that puts them where they should be in the filesystem. IIRC it gives what files it can partly recover names like file0001.chk, file0002.chk, etc and puts them in the root of the partition.
But backing up won't help with that, because if chkdsk can't recover them, the filesystem won't be able to either, so they will be just as corrupted (or not present) in the backup as they are on the original disk.0 -
Well I've backed up all the photos, music, docs onto the external hard-drive.
I've just phoned PCW and they've told me I need to do a system recovery and re-install to factory settings (by pressing F11/Recovery Manager/Advanced Options/System Recovery).
Said I was concerned that the warranty was about to run out but he said that it was reported now and if the system recovery didn't cure the problems, then I was to ring back and they could still repair it.
I told him it would be next week before my son was back to do this (it's his laptop so I don't fancy doing 'the deed').
So, I'll probably leave off with the checkdisk for now.0
