    Thanks, What's a clay bar?

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_253057_langId_-1_categoryId_165527

    • 473ml Mist and Wipe 'Quick Detailer'
    • 118ml Cleaner Wax
    • Supreme Shine Microfibre Towel
    • Clay Bars - individually wrapped x 2
  • for swirls\scratches you'd probably need a machine polish to get them out although you could try:

    meguiars ultimate compound
    swirl x
    scratch x

a polish like autoglym's super resin polish might be able to hide some or reduce their severity as it's a product that fills them in.

a clay bar is used to remove contaminants off the service of the paint that does't come off in the wash. These may be small and not visible to the naked eye but they're there and if you polish without getting rid of these you're effectively rubbing them further into the paintwork and creating micro scratches/swirls.

It isn't, some people just get obsessive about it.;)
  • Clay Bars are excellent.

Use of a clay bar will get tar and stuck on dirt off then give it a go with Autoglyms Super Resin Polish- it contains a mild abrasive and fillers- won't deal with deep scratches (no polish does really) but it will work well on paint work.

  • i am a big fan of autoglym, especially the resin polish, glass cleaner, silicon spray.

but recently because of salt and the cold weather the roof, bonnet and boot lid had blemish marks on them and where kids playng snow ball fights taking snow off the car had left surface scratches, i purchased car plan's rubbing compound (brown stuff in a tin) and car plan wax (blue stuff in a tin) i used the rubbing paste (all over car) first (carefull not to rub too hard) and wipeing that off,i applied the wax, i used car plan polish applicator pad x2 (1 rubbing paste 1 wax) and car plan microfibre mit x2 (1 rubbing off rubbing compound and 1 rubbing off wax) this method i used brought the car up lovely got rid of minor to moderate scratches tarr and traffic film. the pad cost me £1.49x2 and the mits cost me £2.49x2 and the rubbing compound cost me £2.99 and the wax polish cost £5.99, the car has a mirror like finish now and well i'm pleased as washing the car is easy as dirt and grime just glides off with the wash mit and the shine comes back.

I recently bought a clay bar of ebay. It is definitely worth the money as it removes surface contaminents with out the need for "T-Cut". You will need to wash your car thouroughly before using the claybar, with a lubricant. Once done the surface of your car should be like a glass like finish, which is then ready to receive a good coat of wax. With regards to stonechips, blemishes etc the stone chips area will need to be cleaned and gently touched up. the blemishes can be polished out but you will need time, patience and good set of clean materials or you could make matters worse.
