Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Saturday 20th February. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.
Morning OS lovelies, wave.gif
welcome2.gifagirliegirl - Nice to have you with us
Mandi - Thank you for asking, Tris is still having trouble breathing but Michelle is responding well to treatment and may be allowed home soon.
nic1 - I can't wait for my cherry tree to arrive.
sistercas - My friend bought along some Doves gluten/wheat free flour and so I made the sweet pastry pretty much as I usually would. I made sure I let it rest for about an hour once I had brought it together though. It is very sticky and short, so rolling and lifting took a lot of flour!
N9eav - I like that car, we actually test drove one on our long search. And apparently it hasn't been de rigeur to talk about global warming for a while now, it's Global Climate Change. giggle.gif
Sunnyday - HERE. I just googled dwarf cherry trees and checked out a few links. And a 30 litre pot is recommended.
Donny-gal - Positive vibes going out for your friends son and well done on losing another 2lbs.
Squirmy - nice to see you posting again hon
Ladyshopper - Glad you saw another Dr. Hope the pain killers work.
MancMilly - Sorry to hear your son is still so poorly.
SunnyGirl - Glad you are better sweetie.
Taplady - take it easy and relax til you are sure you are better
Hart - I wish you lived closer, I am looking for a new house elf!
Bargainbird - Big hugs honey, I am so sorry.
Sandy - Oh you poor thing, sending positive thought for your lil cat
Noahs - so happy he ate the pasta!! I made this the other night and it was nice hot but cold it was absolutely delicious. Wondered if it might be suitable?
Pastryless Tuna quiche
1 tin of tuna
large onion (finely chopped)
half a large pepper (finely chopped)
1 thick slice of brown/wholemeal bread (grated or chopped into small pieces)
1 cup of grated cheese (100g/4oz))
1oz of margarine (chopped/broken into small pieces)
1 cup of milk (9 fl oz)

3 eggs (whisked with fork)
  • Put all ingredients into a bowl with a good grind of black pepper and mix it all up.
  • Tip it into an oven proof dish and top with sliced tomatoes (optional)
  • Bake in the oven until golden brown and set. (about 25mins at 180degrees-ish)
Delicious served warm and even better cold as the flavour of the cheese really comes out. Slices nicely for packed lunches too.

Thank you to everyone for your kind comments yesterday, I was really touched!
I added some chillies, chilli oil and cheese to the mashed potato last night and it was scrumptious. I preserved some of our HG chillies last year in some olive oil and forgot about them til recently. I chopped them up, seeds and all, and just covered them with some oil in a jam jar.
HShungry.gifBreakfast today is toasted weetabix loaf, and lunch will be cheese savoury sandwiches and crisps. Dinner will be HM pasties with chilli cheese mash (again) and baked beans. Must remember to get the Oakham chicken out of the freezer for Sunday.
I hope everyones weekend starts well, and that anyone feeling poorly head%20cold.gif feels better soon. With love, light and squishy HShuggies.gif for all.

    Hi MSDiva!

Haven't posted recently on this thread (not been very OS recently :o although have still been reading whenever possible! ;)). Hugs and prayers for Michelle and Tris. Tuna quiche sounds yummy - thank you - will add that one to my list of "must try's".

A bit swamped by state of our "new"/"very old" house at the moment. Builders have been in to do initial jobs - am trying to keep the "bigger picture" in mind...it is a huge project we have taken on (general consensus of building professionals we have had round for quotes seems to be that we will have a fantastic house "in 2-3 years time" - money permitting...oh heck!!!:eek::eek:) - just have to keep the bigger picture in mind...I always knew that this was our "forever house" :p - just need to keep the faith long enough to realise the dream!!! :rotfl:

On the other hand, this should be spurring me on to be as OS as possible - every penny saved being OS can be another penny ploughed into our "new home" project (at the moment I am focussing on one re-pointed chimney and a small bit of re-done roof - sounds daft but these tiny steps forward are keeping me going - if one chimney and a small bit of roof can look this good (and be this water-tight!), then there is surely no reason why I can't aim for all 4 chimneys to look good and all of the roof to be water-tight...is there?!?! :o

I am planning my weekly meal-plan and surfing the web for money-off vouchers as we speak...roll on the lottery win and I can move into a 5-star hotel and supervise the renovations from afar in comfort!!! ;)

Hope you all have a good weekend...OS or not! :D

    Morning ladies.

Diva, that tuna tart is somthing my Mum has made for years, ahe got it from a recipe book produced by a local church where all the ladies had contributed their recipes to make up the book and sell for charity. I haven't made it for a good while but its a favourite here and as you say, its even better cold. I've made it with gluten free bread before, I just had to use 2 or 3 slices as its so much smaller but it worked just as well.

I'm at work tonight/this morning. We had a fire yesterday afternoon and the plant is going to be off for a few days......not what we need in the current economic climate! I was hoping to get off home early but the bit of work we did have kept getting delayed and it now looks like I'll only get an extra 30mins in bed if I'm lucky!

I'll probably do some cleaning when I get up at lunch time, tea will be lasagne from the freezer (HM) and probably salad. I'm trying to use up what I have in foodwise, payday is next Thursday and I'm determined to wait till then before I go shopping although I'll have to invest in some fresh milk soon!

It's freezing like mad here, I hope the roads aren't too bad for my drive home, its not far but it really scares me when its all slippery!

    Have a good day everyone.

    Take care xx

    Morning peeps

very cold and icy here this morning, the ice is incredibly thick  i woke at an amazing 2.39 am so i`ll be cream crackered by lunchtime which is when i`ll be taking Dad around the supermarket so wish me luck.

On the plus side i`ve done two lots of washing sorted the dishwasher out and made a loaf. Tidying up the freezer is another job out of the way and i`ve also taken advantage of the cheap rate leccy and had the dryer and hot water on :D The shopping list is written and i`m twiddling my thumbs wondering what to do next.

I think that another cuppa is on the cards in a minute or two as the electricity will switch over to day rate shortly so i`ll be going around turning everything off - i refuse to use most things in the daytime, i`m getting worse as i get older lol.

Diva - Thanks for the link, i shall have a nosy shortly.:D

Piglet6 - Good luck with your house, it`s very rewarding when you can see the bigger picture, this is how we have always worked with our houses, this one will get finished eventually :D

    Lisa Enjoy your sleep!

Nothing much else to report atm so i`ll take myself off and mash the tea.

Catch up later guys, keep warm today BRRR!

Morning all! How are we all today? I've just returned from the holiday from hell. We went to visit relatives in Ireland - eldest DS played up the whole time, OH had a phone call on Tuesday to say his mothers cancer has spread (but he wouldn't fly home to be with her) so there were frequent calls back & forward to UK.

SO pleased to be home. Got to catch up on washing, ironing, shopping etc and get dogs out of kennels, but am going to put in place new routine for the children as I am sooooo fed up with the whinging and the tantrums aaagghhhhh.
    Wish me luck!
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • Morning all
It was lovely & sunny here again yesterday, to dark to see what it will be like today yet.
Work yesterday was a total waste of time, neither of the jobs I went in to do had been prepared but I'm still counting it as I turned up, it's a nuisance as it means next week will be crazy busy.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

    Morning.

    Cold and rainy here.
OH got new car so we spent some time cleaning and polishing. Looks almost like new, but with any second hand car we get the stone chips and dirt from the 2 previous keepers. Still I paid £10,000 less than they did for the same fun.
Road trip today, OH will want to drive about and enjoy the car. I don't think she realises that people won't be looking at her and saying "Look at that woman in her new car" but you feel that way all the same.

Leftovers for supper, carbonara for tea using bacon off cuts 99p and 2 packs of fresh pasta on offer from Sainsbury.... Cheap meal.

Have a nice day. Come on you greens

    Morning everyone :D

It is white with frost here :( I have been rudely awaken again buy neighbours dogs barking (they started at 3.30 this morning) the poor things must be frozen (2 springers that never go out apart from a quick run around a small garden).

Diva, love the sound of the tuna tart, must try it :D. I must be the only one in Derbyshire that actually likes cleaning (well as long as it's not my house :rotfl:) as trying to get a wkend replacement at work has been a nightmare :(

piglet, soon you will be able to look around your home and think it was all worth the mess and chaos :D.

emsf73, sorry to hear your holiday was bit of a nightmare :(

Well I have now had 4 cups of coffee so I well awake now :rotfl: so going off for a shower before the rest of the house wakes.

It is going to be my 1st wkend without work for 2 years so Im going to make the most of it and do some of my sewing projects :j

Kind wishes and hugs to eveyone :D

  • Morning all,up with the lark,or at least the blackbird, and 'Basil' noisily singing for his breakfast, typical man just can't wait for anything.Very cold this morning with a thick white frost silvering the trees. looking out from my desk I can see the sun is around, as the sky over the River Medway is a beautiful pale lightly streaked lilac/pink.I would love to find curtains that colour. But how long it will last I don't know.
I have a lecture this morning ,normally wouldn't have to go in on a Saturday morning ,but its one of the catch-up ones from the bad weather when Uni was closed. So I'd better get a wriggle on and have some breakfast, porridge I think on a chilly morning. Have a good day everyone
    Cheers JackieO
  • Good Morning All

    Sorry about your holiday esmf73!

    Cold and frosty here too.

Didn't have a great day yesterday, ended up feeling sick most of it so had no dinner and an early night and feel much better today.

Ironing is up straight - not bothering with too much housework till the kids go back next week. Today though will be rushing around - DS has signed back on to the local football team and has a match at 10. OH worked last night so I am taking him and having to stand on a muddy freezing cold football pitch - lovely.

DD is having her friend stay over tonight as I am taking them to the X factor concert at Wembley tomorrow. Will be out most of the day tomorrow so need to get all the school stuff sorted today.

Can't wait till next week and having the house back to myself - OH has been "helping" but I prefer to do things my way :D

Going to have a coffee, jump in the shower then start putting on many layers of clothes so I don't freeze my bits off later :(

    Have a good one.x

    Morning All

DD slept until 7am :T _party_ I was awake from 6 but the fact I could just lay and enjoy the heat from the cosy quilt was just lovely...and a Saturday too - she usually makes a point of getting up earlier when I dont have to go to work. I'm sure its part of a bigger plot and she's planning a half four start for tomorrow :D

    I need to :
    • meal plan!! didn't do one this last week and I realised how much I dislike that 'what the h3ll am i gonna do for dinner?' feeling.
    • make a shopping list and get the bits and pieces i'll need to see us through to next weekend.
    • Clean my house!!!! its almost at the point where I'd have to turn visitors away...combination of busy working, hip playing up and DS1 (top cleaner!) working his first 8:30-5pm week and being shattered on a night. So the plan is to have a mini spring clean when DH wakes up.
Of course it is quite possible that none of the above will get done and we will just rest happily in our muck n mess :D

DSIL came round last night and three bottles of wine later I ended up cooking chicken stir fry at half eleven last night - it was really lovely but i'll have to sort something else out for lunch today!

Time for another coffee and get on with what needs doing!

    Have a good day
