Not sure why people are having a go about OP living in LA housing when he asked for help on finding a mortgage. They are having difficulty obtaining a mortgage on that property so how the hell are they supposed to buy something else.
Well, you don't buy until you're in a position to do so. Until then, you rent. And if you earn 33k a year, you rent privately because in most cases, god knows, that enough to afford something pretty reasonable.

This government and the help it gives people is being absolutely taken for granted and instead of being utilised only by those who truly need help, they are being abused by people looking for an easy and/or cheap way of doing what millions of others sacrifice to be able to do.

If EVERYONE in this country looked to the local authority for homes, we'd be collapsing in a country top-heavy with people unprepared to buy from other private individuals. Nobody would be able to move house because nobody would want to pay what we consider market value for something because they'd be able to - and expect to - get something similar from the local authority at a fraction of the cost.

Ten years ago, when I bought my first place, I was earning about 10k a year. My flat cost me 35k. This is proportionately the same income/property value as the OP is looking at. I saved, toiled, struggled and eventually bought my home.

I could have gone to the local authority for a place, but I didn't NEED to. I'd rather leave council homes for people who need them.

I hold Maggie and all governments since Maggie responsible for the most part, but those who live in these properties but don't need to also have to shoulder some of the blame - although of course, one can absolutely understand why they are doing what they're doing.

I wish you well and I hope that you get to buy your house. You have earned it. You pay enough tax.
Errrrrrrrm, pay a hell of a lot of tax, too. What have I earned?

What a good idea kai - Lets punish people for working hard and trying to make something of themselves.
I agree that people shouldn't be punished for hard work and prudence, but I also think there should be limits. There are people desperate for nice council houses. People who need them and people who deserve them. People with disabilities unable to work and unable to earn money to buy their home home.

If a house is nice enough for someone earning 33k a year to want to buy, it's obviously the kind of place that would make a great home for a family who really the help.

My advice to you is get a council house. You can then do what Maggie Thacher wanted all the poor voters to do,own property.

i agree with you money mad , it is obvious that the ones who have posted here about council tennants are the ones who were stupid enough to go out and pay a fortune for houses that were not worth the money they paid for them and now are most likely in negative equity bummer but you have to look after the pennies and the pounds take care of themselves ,I would like nothing more than to buy our own house that we could make our home and not just sell it on in a couple of years to make a massive profit out of ordinary working people ,and the joneses round here dont take much keeping up with lol :)
I am going to put the four properties I own - that I bought either off-plan or via the normal market - up for sale, pocket a few hundred grand in profit (because I'm not in negative equity on any of them) and then sign up for a council house. Sit in it for a few years, then buy it at a huge discount!

Hell, I'll put my brother in one, too, and give him the cash to buy on my behalf. Might get a friend to do it, too.

Council homes should not be viewed as a cheap way of getting on the property ladder. These are homes that should be made available to people who need help putting a roof over their heads.

Every house that the council sell off to a private buyer actually saves tax payers money, this is because council rent is subsidised by tax payers.

There's absolutely no need to get personal, Bear.

I'm making a comment and expressing my opinion on something. If you have to reduce yourself to trying to belittle me using such juvenile methods, I pity you.

I know exactly what kind of environment you work in..... ;)

Also, boxer, I don't have a Porsche at all. I drive a crappy 2006 Renault. I struggle to make ends meet from month to month because the rents I get on my flats don't cover my payments.

This isn't about anything other than my personal opinion that council houses should be the reserve of the needy.

Would you please either argue maturely or f*ck off?! I'm being civil, polite and courteous while putting my point across. You may not agree with me, but you don't seem to want to tell me why. You instead seem to favour insults and abuse. Shame.
