60 motorway miles in my 1.6 petrol Astra would cost me around £7 (42 MPG @ £1.10 per litre)

In a diesel returning 55mpg this would be £5.50 (55 MPG @ £1.12 per litre).

So 5 trips a week, 52 weeks a year this would be £1820 vs £1430. Given that you're unlikely to be working every working day of every week the difference might be even smaller.

Obviously it's not quite as clear cut as this (the diesel figures are ones I've plucked out of my head) but these are the kind of comparisons you'd need to make.
  • I did look at more expensive cars - but my budget is stuck at the £7k mark.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to opt for a 1.2 Corsa Energy, which is currently that price. Have test drove the models, I preferred the Corsa for comfort, and seemed quite nippy.

    Cheers for the help!

I have a Corsa 1.3 Eco flex and I love it. It is really economical and easy to drive.

Yep nothing like a reliable Toyota... oh....

You can't make sweeping generalisations like that, all makes have flaws and issues.

Mind you never heard 18 trips to a dealer in 13 weeks- how did that poster accept it- even for a Fiat who are getting better that is poor, I wouldn't have got past 5.

I'm not keen on the Corsa- wouldn't have been my choice but hope the OP enjoys it.

20 years as a vehicle technician/workshop manager gives a wonderful insight into reliability

Despite the recent adverse bad publicity Toyota have had, I would still buy a Toyota in preference to any Vauxhall, Citroen, Fiat etc.
