I am officially knackered. It took me all yesterday afternoon sitting out in the garden with a big trug full of water to wash up all the used plant pots, then I spent all day today replanting them with seedlings of basil, coriander, beetroot, purple-sprouting broccoli & rocket.
Completely out of space now except for a two-tray space in the propagator (one side of my brain says "SOW" the other side says "NO", oh what to do?)
kimmee, I'll have a p please Bob too! And I remember podding Nan's peas sitting in her garden (one of my best memories, Pop used to peel the spuds in a bowl of water in the other deck chair, we'd all be chatting away & listening to the birds). No matter how many posh recipes we try, nothing ever tastes as good as Nan's cooking with veg straight from her garden. Thanks for the smile0 -
Hey all.
Very excited, one of my strawberries is turning red!! :T
Oh, and I notice that cashback on Thompson & Morgan has increased to 16%! Ask me how I know... :rotfl:
Katholicos, pics are impressive as always, total inspiration!
I really wish I'd done some peas, oh well, always next year! Mummy to an amazing little girl0 -

Glad it brought back good memories for you too izzwizz yeah - I know it's not just my memory going (:rotfl:) but everything DID taste better then especially stuff from Nan & Grandads garden and my Nans apple pie was to die for:drool: . You've been busy today - know what you mean about the sow/no argument you've been having with yourself - I am completely besotted with my garden now and that's the only place I want to be0 -

besotted is the word! Spent this evening in front of the telly looking through the flower seeds for some hardy perennials. Even though I've nowhere for the pots, I found some hardy geraniums, hollyhocks & dianthus that just *have* to be sown tomorrow. Did your Nan put cloves in her apple pie too? Oh, and bread & butter pudding...getting hungry again. Bang goes the diet for another day :rotfl:

LOL - I have bought loads of flower seeds ready for next spring, I now daren't look into any more catalogues or websites cos I get the urge to get out the credit card - must resist, must resist!! I have to go to work Mon - Fri and that takes me away from my beloved (the garden!) but I'm absolutely certain that if I didn't go to workI would spend all week in the placeand hang the housework, anyway good luck with your sowings
I don't remember my nan adding cloves but she may well have done, I just remember perfectly cooked apples, just the right amount of sugar and pastry that just melted in the mouth. I've never been a fan of bread and butter pudding but her lamb stew and her steak and kidney pud........oh dear, this has made me verrrry hungry and as I am presently craving pastry (have't had a bit of it since November) I really think I should just go to bed!0 -
Hi I am very new to this veg growing fun and I need some basic advice...Back during the last week of April I planted two rows of seed potatoes along with numerous other crops, well the bushes (is this what we call them? ) are now standing at least 18 inches above the surface and are covered in vey healthy green looking leaves. My question is how long do I leave them before digging them up as I can't wait to see how many if any potatoes I have ? ...sorry for sounding a bit vague about it but it is truely the first thing ive grown since a sunflower at school .0

I believe the green stuff is referred to by some as the 'haulms'. I just call it 'green stuff' or 'foliage' :-)
My advice? Don't dig them up too soon. Last week one of my large plant pots that had potatoes growing in it, looked a bit the worse for wear, the green stuff was about 24 inches high and had started to flop over quite badly. I assumed (wrongly) that it was a sign to empty the pot and harvest the potatoes. I should have waited. I only harvestes a handlful of teeny tiny potatoes.
This is my first time for growing veg, that's my only excuse.
Another large container (with more potatoes gorwing in it) with very high green stuff is in flower at the moment. I'm going to wait for it all to die back and then harvest. Hopefully i will have a better crop to harvest, being rewarded for my patience.
Incidentally, i like your Ipswich Town Football Club Avatar!
My Dad's family moved to Ipswich when he was a lad (he moved to the midlands after meeting and marrying my Mother, some years later) and i have spent many a happy time in Ipswich myself - still have family there. I even lived and worked in Ipswich for a while when i was half the age i am now. My brother used to be mad on Ipswich Footie club, and though i wasn't interested in football myself, i still recall the names of some of the players from way back...Kevin Beattie and Mick Mills spring to mind!Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

Hi thanks for the tip my ones were starting to flop at the weekend but on looking today they are upright again (note the careful choice of words there !!!) it must have been all the rain we had yesterday.I guess I will have to be a bit more patient...
As for Ipswich Town ive supported them all my life and lived in the town all my life also...the names you mention are just a happy memory from better days for our club along with the legend that was Sir Bobby Robson !!!!0 -
I have just spent the morning in the garden getting some more seeds planted. Ive put in more carrots, spring onions, beetroot and turnips. Also repotted my purple basil, spearmint and planted some more salad leaf seeds into 2 nice pots to give my parents, and brother & SIL.
My strawberries are getting huge and are changing colour, there are still lots of flowers coming through. There are over 100 flowers on my rasberry canes, and there was a bee happily buzzing from flower to flower! My 3 blueberry bushes have about 20 berries between them but I am pleased I have that many as they were new this year from wilkinsons so I throught I wouldnt have any till next year.
Everything seems to be coming on really well, and even my 20 month DS is having fun 'helping', I have given him a plastic spade, watering can and a pot of compost which seems to have stopped him trying to dig up my vegies.DFW NERD NO.656 DEBT FREE 24TH NOVEMBER 2010 TOTAL DEBT AUGUST 2007 £39000MFiT T2 NO.56 WE OWN [STRIKE]25%[/STRIKE] 31.5% OF OUR HOUSE SO FAR!0
